1. Lemmon
A truly outstanding performance.

As was Lee Remick's.

4. There were scenes where I could swear they actually were drunk
Especially when Remick's in the motel. God, that was fantastic.

10. I grew up with an alcoholic father, and could have
sworn that Lemmon had channeled my dad when I saw that movie. Jack Lemmon was one of the greatest actors ever born.

11. It's pretty easy to play a drunk
It's not easy to play one well.

Lemmon did what I'd consider impossible: He played a drunk to perfection, and he played a drunk getting sober to perfection.

12. I felt the same way, mykpart.
My dad was an alcoholic, and while Days of Wine and Roses is an excellent movie, it brought me to tears sometimes while I watched it.

3. I must admit that my first thought was "Days of Wine and Roses"
followed closely by Burton & Taylor in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe".

Good poll.

6. Someone has to say it:
George W.Bush in Fahrenheit 911.

With 'favorite' meaning 'least favorite,' as exemplified by the "bad"-meaning-"good" school of colloquial irony.

14. here's an oldie
Lee Marvin from 1965's Cat Ballou. It's the story of a woman (Jane Fonda) who hires a famous gunfighter to avenge her father's murder. Lee Marvin's character is a washed up drunk gunfighter that can only function when gassed. It's a very funny western. Marvin's character is such a drunk that his horse even drinks and leans up against the wall and crosses his legs before passing out.

Kudos also to Bellushi from Animal House.

20. Jimmy Steward's Elwood P. Dowd, Harvey
Although he has only one drink during the film, we are left with the impression Elwood spends most of his day nicely lubed.
