I waited my entire adult life for LOTR to be made |
|
I first read The Hobbit and The Trilogy in 1973, back when I was still doing a novel a day when possible. Needless to say, it took me a little longer for those four books- I lost myself in the story for days. And even then I wondered how a movie could be made of it.
Then came Peter Jackson, and his brilliant, magnificent, astounding vision of the story of Bilbo and Frodo. The technology finally came together, the right people finally came together, and a classic for the ages was made. A story that a few privileged people had been aware of was thrust into the planet's consciousness, and it was good. The Lord Of The Rings became reality.
Now comes The Hobbit (or in modern movie parlance, "The Prequel"). I've been dreaming and waiting, and I knew it would be as lovingly translated by Peter as the others. I had no doubts at all.
Alas, it now appears it will not be so. Peter believed he was entitled to a cut of the merchandising and other profits, and he went for it, but the film heads said NO. Thus Peter Jackson removed himself from the Hobbit production team.
They blew it. For the price of a few measly dollars off the top, they could have had a perfectly matched set- four movies that would live for generations. But they couldn't give Mr. Jackson his just reward, and it's us who will pay the real price when an inferior imitation comes onto the big screen.
Pay the man, you freaking morans! Let him finish his vision! Give him the money he deserves and let him complete the job for us all! Don't be the complete assholes we all know you are- I want my Hobbit movie, and I want Peter Jackson to make it!

5. I believe I was sitting at the computer, browsing the internets |

I distinctly recall doing several handsprings, but that just may be my mind playing tricks. It's been a lot longer than that since I could really do handsprings...

And was I ever disappointed. What makes it worse is they really could have done it proper. They got everything but the story right. At least I'll always have the books.

6. The only character I really missed was Tom Bombadil |
|
Otherwise, I accept they did what they had to do in order to get it told in a reasonable timeframe.
Nothing ever comes out perfectly, but I accept Peter's vision and what he did with it.

8. I'm a real stickler for keeping it the way it's supposed to be. |

I guess I'm too much of a LOTR geek. I just sat there fuming while pointing out all the story flaws. I can see editing a bit here and there for the sake of brevity even though I wouldn't like it but I don't understand why they had to change major parts of the story and omit characters to accommodate a love angle for Aragorn, it wasn't necessary. Stuff like that pisses me off.

Nearly six years ago, my husband left. During a two year divorce he fought me for custody of my two younger daughters. My older daughter (from a previous relationship) was completely dropped by him, in spite of the fact that he had raised her since she was two.
That year Fellowship of the Ring came out. That was the first Christmas my family was split. Not knowing what to do to lessen the pain of a Christmas Eve without her sisters and Dad, i took my daughter to see LOTR. She was nine and we sat in the theater that night and entered Tolkien's world. We longed for Bag End, fell irretrievably in love with Gandalf, worried for Frodo and sobbed for Boromir. And the pain of our own lives was a little less bitter.
Over the years, we have watched these films countless times in some form or another. Sometimes we have a Drama Queen night and attempt to watch them all together. (We never make it) Other times they simply play in the background. They are a source of comfort to my daughter. They have helped us escape (for three hours at a time) into another world. A world where a pure heart triumphs, simple lives matter, loyalty is rewarded, love survives... It is a beautiful world.
I will forever be loyal to Jackson for giving us this. It was a vision of love. And we shared it, when we needed it most.
Jackson needs to finish this vision.
P.S. The custody has since worked out favorably, the kids are happy and healthy and my ex and i have worked out a sort of parental friendship.
