My friend in Bali is dying, and I want to share.
He's been fighting lung cancer for 4 years (4 years after he stopped smoking) by going to Singapore to get treatments.
I wanted him to go to MD Anderson (they spent 6 weeks here when his young wife had ovarian cancer and got cured) but he wouldn't do it.
Now he's dying.
I'm leaving Friday on a trip to hell (21+ hours) I never thought I would ever take. I'm going to comfort his wife, my dying friend, and to help in any way that I can. I just hope he lives long enough to know his friends love him.
Love your friends, your family, and Happy Thanksgiving; bless you all.

5. I wish I could share 'herk', but I fear not. The other
problem I will have to contend with is communication. If/when Colin dies, how will I ever communcate with hsi wife (an Indonesian), who will go back to JAva?
I lose two friends.

3. You're a good friend to have, bablonsister.
I am a Hospice volunteer and know how important it is to give support to the families that are facing terminal illness. Blessings of Strength, Love and Compassion to you.
May your dear friend's passage be smooth and easy.

11. I am not a hospice volunteer so you deserve credit, Shine.
But I do know support; I hope he lives long enough to know he has it.
My sister is a hospice volunteer in CA (my mom had hospice care) and
I applaud you both!
And you are that really healthy girl that runs marathons and stuff, right? :hi:

18. Well, not exactly. I'm a cyclist and I do organized century rides: 100 miles in a day.
:D but thanks for the compliment.

I volunteer in CA, too. I'm in the Santa Cruz area.

The practical support you can offer makes a huge difference, as well as the love and listening you provide. Just being present is the greatest gift of all. Blessings to you on your journey....

4. Babylonsister, my heart goes out to you. We're also on a death watch...
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 11:12 PM by Radio_Lady
my ex-husband, a decades-long smoker of cigarettes and pipes, was given 4 - 6 months to live in March 2006. My two adult children are stoic, but heartbroken, and have tried to visit with together and separately to make peace with him and his wife of 35 years.

I plan to light two candles of remembrance for your friend and my ex-husband tonight. Let us hope that they go from this world in whatever twilight sleep Morpheus can construe.

Please fly safely and let us hear from you again. You are a dear friend and I salute you.

In peace,

Radio_Lady in Oregon

PS. Here is the link to the candle for Babylonsister's friend in Bali (BSB) (It will burn for 48 hours.)

15. My heart is breaking. I saw this man in July, we went sailing on his
boat. I will never forget the smile I saw on his face because we pushed the issue of sailing. It was a great day. I will embrace that smile forever.

16. For you it's a trip to hell,
For him, please ease him out with comfort and joy. Let him know he won't be forgotten and his wife will be watched out for. I almost lost my son this summer. I had a lot of time to think, sitting by his bed in the hospital. I also had the gift of my son talking to me when he realized that he may not live. Touch and humor, and good nurses. That's the trinity.

26. Touch, humor, good nurses. I can try to provide the first two.
I'm sorry if that 'trip to hell' remark sounded selfish; what he's going through is far worse. Thanks for your kind words.

20. Oh my...
you are a good friend, indeed. I know it will be really hard to do this, but sleeping on the plane the way over there will help reduce jet lag (along with drinking bottled water). I've made the long trip to Indonesia four times. Coming back is a little harder on the body (you'll probably need an extra day to sleep when you return..if you can get it).

Hugs for you and his family.

:hug

22. i'm so sorry
in case you doubt him, the treatment he got in singapore is EVERY BIT the equal of what he could have got at md anderson, people young people die who go to md anderson too and you can probably guess how i know that

lung cancer is not really beatable at our state of knowledge so please don't blame your friend for doing what was best to preserve a future for his wife

he already knows his friends love him, and you are a terrific person, you just don't give yourself enough credit
