Anyone here use a USB portable hard drive.
I would like to use it for my laptop.

I really don't like to store to much in my computer, lost to much last time when the hard disk drive died.

1. I think everyone who relies on a laptop should purchase one.
Well worth it, especially for backup. I have backed up all of my writing on a USB drive.

4. Thanks Writer
I have been buying the 1 and 2 GB flash drives but they can fill up
so fast, a larger external drive would hold a lot.

I bought a 4GB flash drive and it is almost full, the same price I could buy a 8GB hard drive.

Thanks for the infomation.

7. Definitely or...
Use an online storage site. I recently found out that CD-R's are not as reliable as they once were. The quality must be going way down as I only buy the brand names but recently with a Maxell CD-R that I backed some very important data on a month and a half ago won't even read on the PC. I was looking for an older version of a newer file and was screwed. Not too bad, just an annoyance but it could have been worse. That's about the third time over this past year it's happened with the newer CD-R's. I have older ones over four years old still working but I'm always skeptical using new ones now.

2. ever since the storm
I've relied on the usb portable hard drive to back up my computers, at home and at work.

They cost next to nothing and back up is so easy. Their compact size makes them so practicle, you can't go wrong relying on one, imho.

12. I have a 80 GB 2.5"
It was the biggest at the time

I didn't want to buy a 3.5", because it would need extra power.

19. Lots of old family pictures.
I am talking about Great grandparents and up.

Lots of different sizes.

My cousin is emailing some of them and others she is sending on DVDs. Lots more to come.

Some of them I have never seen before.

One of them is my Grandparents dating using a horse and buggy.

23. I have a 120 GB external
The kind you have to plug into the wall. It's very handy, way better for transferring big files than e-mailing them to myself. I'm trying to figure out if I can set it up to boot Linux when I want it (which seems to be most of the time now).

24. Get yourself
a good 2 gigabyte thumbdrive with good read/write speeds. John Haller's "Portable Apps Suite" (http://portableapps.com/suite) is a useful addition. I use KeePass, which I can't praise enough (http://keepass.sourceforge.net) and a portable version of Firefox everywhere I go.

25. Just do it.
Even get two. One for backup, kept safely apart from the computer most of the time, and one for the road.

26. You might want to look into amazon S3....
http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=16427261

If data can't ever be lost it rocks and is cheap. Super redundancy. I wouldn't use it for music, but, It is perfect for customers files.

All of the documents, songs, and pictures I've colected over the last 3 years are on it. Plus I have 5 thumb drives from 256MB to 1gb for transporting music and pictures for work and friends.

Can you run a program off a portable hard drive, like the CD that came with my new camera.
