I just bought my first guitar ever
Seagull S6+ Folk

I've been playing for a few weeks now, but I don't sound like Leo Kottke. I must be doing something wrong.

2. Did you tune it?
Seriously, I hear more guitar players struggle because the guitar comes out of tune and they don't reach up and take the time to retune the guitar. That's rule number one in my book. Stay in tune.

Happy playing. Love guitars.

6. Nice looking git-fiddle
Here is what I tell people who ask me how to learn, go get some songbooks with songs you know well. They have them with the chords above the words and it shows you where to put your fingers. Play the songs you know over and over. First it will be slow, but as time goes on you will be able to play the chords quicker.

It's great to learn how to play "by the book", but most people just want to be able to entertain either other people or themselves and after you learn how to play chords and what they are, you will be able to pick out songs easier. That's how I learned how to play, I would play some Beatles or Neil Young songs or something. I would also play them faster and faster just to build up my dexterity.

Just a suggestion. Have fun

15. I've just started doing that
I had been doing exercises and trying to get my fingers to play chords. The last couple of days I've been learning a simple song (You Are My Sunshine), and it makes learning more fun.

Thanks for the advice.

7. Keep at it--You can do it!
Here's my guitar--a Dean Cutaway Exotica Acoustic with amp pick up.

And seconded re: tuning. Get a tuner...makes all the difference :hi:

Here are a couple of online tuners

And I know that I'm never gonna get close to Kottke. I saw him a couple of years ago, and the sick thing is, he makes it look completely effortless, like he could be knocking out those licks while simultaneously sleeping and doing his taxes. Same when I saw Bert Jansch a few weeks ago.

Nice gitbox, by the way.

11. Might As Well Aim High
And Kottke is about as high as it gets, when it comes to accoustic guitar mastery. I'd kill to be able to play "Living In The Country" half as well as Leo does. Best of luck to you.....

12. Lucky you!
I'm in the market for a guitar myself. I've decided that I must learn to play some of the guitar licks I hear in the Brazilian music I love. When I was a young-en I played steel string, but now I'm going for a classical guitar.

After much thought I've decided to forgo shopping for one on Ebay, because in my experience with guitars you never know how you're going to feel about one until you play it. I used to have two steel strings--one Yamaha I bought new, and another Sears and Roebuck special someone gave me that I believe may have actually been constructed out of plywood. I never liked the former, and the latter sounded like crap but had just the sweetest action. You can guess which one I played the most.

Good luck!

19. You know, I never cared much for them....
But I decided to retire my 30 year old Yamaha and went to the store to shop. This one had a great sound and wasn't too terribly expensive.

16. A players first guitar is a very special thing
My first guitar was a 2000 Fender Mexican Stratocaster. Midnight red with a maple fretboard. It is sweeeeeeeeeet!

I still don't own my own acoustic though. I want an Ovation round-body, but there's no chance of that happening while the man continues to keep me down :(

Play on Brotha! Never put it down, your fingers will hate you but your spirit will soar!
