Was this inappropriate? A slightly gay joke.
I have a client who went to Clemson. He works in my industry and I would say it is rare for people to be "out" in my industry. Yet, he came out to me about 2 years ago. We travel together and have much fun. Today his Clemson Tigers are playing the South Carolina GameCocks. So, from half way across the country I text messaged him at half time because Clemson was winning and i said "Get those Cocks!"

I haven't heard back. There could be a million reasons why, but I hope it's not because he's offended!

It's all in good fun and he ususally has a great sense of humor.

Was it wrong?

1. I Don't Know?
I'm not a good judge of that kind of thing but it might have been offensive, or he might be laughing his ass off, or he might have his phone turned off.

3. He's a known trash talker.
And not generally a "sensitive" guy. He takes as good as he gives in general.

I just haven't heard back, so I'm slightly paranoid.

5. Maybe he's just watching the game?
It's hard to say if he'd find it offensive or not without knowing the guy. Certainly you're not the first person to make a sexualized joke about the Cocks.

2. I officially hate the "views" button. I see 12 views and no comments.
Come on people, say "yea, it's funny" or "gee, it's offensive."

Personally, I think it's funny.

7. probably because no one knows what to say, lol.
Oh how I don't miss that gamecocks/tigers rivalry, glad not to have to hear about it anymore since I no longer live 10 miles from Clemson.

I don't know why you couldn't just ask your friend if he was offended, he'd probably appreciate you cared enought about the situation to ask.

There are usually way more views than comments on every thread. And the truth is, gay people are individuals and some might be offended and some might not be, just like on threads here you will see people who get offended and others who say lighten up, and on the next thread those two folks might change positions and be saying the exact opposite. There is really no formula, it depends on the individual, and you know him better than any of us do.

11. I'm just being paranoid, having had a few libations myself.
I'm sure he would think it was funny. We've had many, many cocktails on the road together and I know he'd think it was funny. I was just second guessing a bit.

4. Tongue in cheek yes, but offensive? To some perhaps, but it seems harmless enough.
It's not anti or pro anything. Just a double entendre.

8. According to some here, I'm too sensitive to gay jokes, but...
that's not offensive at all, especially in the context of sports. Although, I'm happy you were sensitive to it. Too much people say flat out homophobic things and get pissed when the gays don't laugh along.

12. Well, it's a fine line.
And I would say that in general, I think that gay men have a bit of a better humor about it.

Having said that, my favorite aunt has been "out" my whole life (and I'm 35), so I am well versed in the Lesbian life as well. I'm not saying that lesbians don't have a sense of humor, it's just been my experience that men are slightly "lighter" about being out in general.

Please.....please note this is only my opinion.

It should be noted that my Aunt wore a button that said "Closets are for clothes" to my high school graduation, in a very conservative, 70% Republican area. Now, that's funny too, but in a different way.

but in general it's harder to be offended a) when you like somebody and b) when your team is winning.

10. I don't think it would be
offensive if the two of you have spoken to each other in a similar way in the past. Text him again and say something about the game. If the two of you are friends, I'm sure he would tell you if you went a little over the line and give you a chance to make amends.
I've never thought of the phrase "Get those Cocks!" as a gay comment. It's just something one would say in the heat of the moment when you are taken up in the excitement of the game.

20. I think it's ok
I mean, after all, they do call themselves the GameCOCKS. I don't see it really being all that offensive. God knows, I've seen far worse around here.

Like it was said down thread, it is nice that you're concerned enough to bring it up here.
