3. a good place to browse movies is netflix
you can look by categories (independent and documentaries are among my favorites). You can join or just make a list. It shows all kinds of ratings and my guess is its a pretty liberal viewership doing the ratings. 9/11 gets top rating and was in the top 10 movies rented there for ages.

That is one of my top 50 movies of all time - ANYTHING by the Cohen Brothers!

I love the music in Brother Whereforart Thou.. while watching, remember that it's based on an Ancient Greek Saga.. :)

"The Big Lebowski" you won't regret it, might not learn much, but you'll have a hell of a good time, so sayeth "The Dude" :)

15. The Keeper:The Legend of Omar Khayyam
THE KEEPER: THE LEGEND OF OMAR KHAYYAM

With: Marie Espinoza, Bruno Lastra as Omar, Vanessa Redgrave, Moritz Bleibtreu as Sultan Malikshah, Radz Serbedzjia(Boris the bad guy in Snatch)

This is the BEST MOVIE I've ever seen. Made by an Iranian immigrant, Kayvan Mashayekh, based in Houston, this is an indie film released in Summer 2005. The story of Omar Khayyam, author of the Rubaiyat. A famous verse:

"The Moving Finger writes: and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it."

Omar Khayyam was also an astronomer and mathematician. He solved cubic equations and invented a calendar that is still used throughout Persia. His story is mixed with a modern day story of his descendants in Houston.

The Keeper is the person in each family responsible for keeping the family traditions and stories alive. Talks about family traditions without going off into mushy stuff.

I have watched it eight or ten times and I keep picking up new things each time I watch it. Filmed in Houston (modern day stuff) and Uzbekistan (Omar's time). A gorgeous movie and a mere 95 minutes.

Now Mr. Mashayekh is working on a movie about Cyrus the Great.

You can order this DVD at www.greatomar.com. The package is lovely.

Or you can buy it at Walmart, Hollywood Video or Netflix.

A woman who was a dancer in the movie (Shani Rigsbee) has a music video you can see at www.shanimusic.com called "From Here to Beyond".

The people of Persia have done amazing things and created great civilizations. That gets lost in the fact that the imperialists running the US have been meddling in that part of the world for decades.

88. Their best film by far is "The Man Who Wasn't There"
All other films by them that I have seen, including Fargo and The Big Lebowski, are second-tier efforts in comparison to "The Man.." Sorry to disappoint you; I know I'm in the minority. "O Brother..." starts out great, but falls apart about halfway through, in my opinon.

Looks easy, don't get it until next week. Don't know the model # offhand, suppose it's on the receipt? Has a DVD and a VCR in one dealybob. I do not claim to be any kind of whiz with anything electronic. My child does all that. LOL, I'm going to be lost when he borrows his way off to college. I let you know when I get it about the user friendliness.

38. Little known film
called "MindWalk", (Google it, you won't be sorry) if you want to examine human thought over the centuries from Des Cartes (SP?) and the Universe as a big "machine" to a more Organic Universal view -- the characters are a Poet, a man who'd just run for US President, and a lady Nuclear Physicist, all set in a small village in some moors in France, a vacation spot for those who REALLY want to get away..

The movie is brilliant and some of the exchange will amaze and certainly enlighten you.

I recommend this film to everyone, might be hard to find though, I think DVD joints never stock it and those who own it won't sell it :)

DEEP film, bring your waterwings :)

go to your local library, Check out their selection they may have a lot depending where you live, If you see anything you like check it out from them first before you go out and buy it. If you like the movie go out and buy it, if it sucks you didn't spend anything but your time watching it.

71. Do you have to look for "with director's commentary?" or is director's
commentary on all of the editions?

Bagdad Cafe (not about Iraq), just a cool movie - the late Jack Palance was in it.
Young Frankenstein or a Pink Panther movie for laughs.
Baraka - beautiful movie.
Oh - and Lost in America! One of my favorites. :-)

89. I haven't seen enough of them, frankly. I did
like Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove and The Shining. I did not like A Clockwork Orange at all. I have not seen Barry Lyndon, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, or anything he did before Spartacus, so I really don't know what others of his I would consider "essential," but of the ones I have seen, I believe "2001" will be the film he will be remembered for 100 years from now.

90. He made some interesting ones
Paths of Glory (1957) is famous

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0050825/

Barry Lyndon (1975) is probably famous for it's camera lens and filming during candle light

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0072684/

Why do you prefer natural lighting?

Because it's the way we see things. I have always tried to light my films to simulate natural light; in the daytime using the windows actually to light the set, and in night scenes the practical lights you see in the set. This approach has its problems when you can use bright electric light sources, but when candelabras and oil lamps are the brightest light sources which can be in the set, the difficulties are vastly increased. Prior to Barry Lyndon, the problem has never been properly solved. Even if the director and cameraman had the desire to light with practical light sources, the film and the lenses were not fast enough to get an exposure. A 35mm movie camera shutter exposes at about 1/50 of a second, and a useable exposure was only possible with a lens at least 100% faster than any which had ever been used on a movie camera. Fortunately, I found just such a lens, one of a group of ten which Zeiss had specially manufactured for NASA satellite photography. The lens had a speed of fO.7, and it was 100% faster than the fastest movie lens. A lot of work still had to be done to it and to the camera to make it useable. For one thing, the rear element of the lens had to be 2.5mm away from the film plane, requiring special modification to the rotating camera shutter. But with this lens it was now possible to shoot in light conditions so dim that it was difficult to read. For the day interior scenes, we used either the real daylight from the windows, or simulated daylight by banking lights outside the windows and diffusing them with tracing paper taped on the glass. In addition to the very beautiful lighting you can achieve this way, it is also a very practical way to work. You don't have to worry about shooting into your lighting equipment. All your lighting is outside the window behind tracing paper, and if you shoot towwards the window you get a very beautiful and realistic flare effect.

Full Metal Jacket is one of my favorites

Everybody has it's own taste, but I have the impression that Kubrick mainly did important movies he wanted to make.

91. Thanks, I'll check those out. Sadly, I think "2001" is not appreciated by younger filmgoers.
After reading through comments about "2001" on imDb.com, it seems like younger film fans tend to find it boring, and call it overrated. They grew up on fast-paced, action-packed science fiction films like "Star Wars" and "The Matrix" and the frenetic action of video games. So when they finally sit down to a slow-paced, ponderous film like "2001" of course they are bored to tears, because there's not a chase, explosion or death every 3 seconds.
