Songs that can give you chills (in a good way)
There's lots of them, but I'll nominate:

Bonnie Raitt, "I Can't Make You Love Me."

3. "Liebestod" (literally "love and death") from Tristan und Isolde...
Edited on Sun Nov-26-06 10:39 AM by Drum
a really sublime piece of music, this coincides with Isolde's death at the end of the opera. Very good chills....

Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLdebXaM4OA (5 minutes)

:)

EDIT: here's a better link, Herbert von Karajan conducting with the stellar Jessye Norman singing, 9 minutes, complete concert version. ****

45. Chills?...
I will have tears flowing down my face for the duration of that song. I WILL cry, every time I hear it. The other day I watched a nine-plus minute live version on YouTube--twice in a row--and I was crying for nearly twenty minutes. Hell, I saw a commercial for ER the other night with like two lines of that song in it, and I was crying during that. It is my number-one ultimate tear-jerker song.

56. Waterfall is one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME
I've been dreaming in the sun
won't you wake me up someone
I need a little peace of mind

wake me from this dream
that I have dreamed so many times
I neeed a little peace of mind

Woah - woah, I need a little peace of mind

When you open up your life to the limit
All things start
spilling in on you

And you're flowing like a dreamer
The changer and the changed

You've got to spill some over
spill some over
spill some over

over all

Filling up and spilling over it's an endless waterfall
Filling up and spilling over over all

Filling up and spilling over it's an endless waterfall
Filling up and spilling over over all

Like the rain
falling on the ground

16. Red Rain...
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me

I am standing up at the waters edge in my dream
I cannot make a single sound as you scream
It cant be that cold, the ground is still warm to touch
This place is so quiet, sensing that storm

Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me

Well Ive seen them buried in a sheltered place in this town
They tell you that this rain can sting, and look down
There is no blood around see no sign of pain
Hay ay ay no pain
Seeing no red at all, see no rain

Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me

Red rain-
Putting the pressure on much harder now
To return again and again
Just let the red rain splash you
Let the rain fall on your skin
I come to you defences down
With the trust of a child

Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
And I cant watch any more
No more denial
Its so hard to lay down in all of this
Red rain is coming down
Red rain is pouring down
Red rain is coming down all over me
I see it
Red rain is coming down
Red rain is pouring down
Red rain is coming down all over me
Im bathing in it
Red rain coming down
Red rain is coming down
Red rain is coming down all over me
Im begging you
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Over me in the red red sea
Over me
Over me
Red rain

50. Thank you...
..that was nice, too (found part of the song at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=FgFpjB1m6Z8).

Still, there is something in the story-telling...and the way Jimmy Buffett can sing about clouds, I guess, that draws me in. While Buffett may not have the better voice, I still like his version...even more. Does that make me a Parrothead? ;-)

Either way, it's a song with a lot of feeling, isn't it?

And yeah, "I can't make you love me" gets me too.

I was two weeks into the split that led to divorce; we'd already bought Bonnie Raitt tickets, and I found 3 friends who wanted to go. It was going great, I thought, "hey, I'm having a good time, I can survive this". Then she started into I Can't Make You Love Me... gaaah! I lost it.

Live - Lightning Crashes Lyrics

Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
her placenta falls to the floor
the angel opens her eyes
the confusion sets in
before the doctor can even close the door

lightning crashes, an old mother dies
her intentions fall to the floor
the angel closes her eyes
the confusion that was hers
belongs now, to the baby down the hall

oh now feel it comin' back again
like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
I can feel it.

lightning crashes, a new mother cries
this moment she's been waiting for
the angel opens her eyes
pale blue colored iris,
presents the circle
and puts the glory out to hide, hide

59. Nightswimming by R.E.M.
Gets me right in the gut every time:

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse
Still, it's so much clearer
I forgot my shirt at the water's edge
The moon is low tonight

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
I'm not sure all these people understand
It's not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
Of recklessness and water
They cannot see me naked
These things, they go away,
Replaced by everyday

Nightswimming, remembering that night
September's coming soon
I'm pining for the moon
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
Could not describe nightswimming

You, I thought I knew you
You, I cannot judge
You, I thought you knew me,
This one laughing quietly underneath my breath
Nightswimming

The photograph reflects,
Every streetlight a reminder
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night

And also "I See A Darkness" by Will Oldham, whose own version I've never heard. Johnny Cash's on his Solitary Man album is incredibly powerful.
