WOOHOO - There will be Venison this year - WOOHOO |
|
First, please do NOT start a flame war if you are someone who has issues with hunting. I do not hunt, but I come from rural Pennsylvania and a family of folks who not only enjoyed hunting, but some of them worked for the PA State Game Commission. I have no problem with hunting provided you stay within the limits created and actually use the product you are hunting. (IE - either use the meat or donate it to charity, which many out there will take donated deer).
So my step-father got a big 8-pt buck this year. They are in the process of butchering it right now and I'm looking forward to Venison steaks this year - much healthier than cows or pigs
:woohoo:

and it's really healthy for you... lots of those omega-3s (without the mercury levels you usually find in fish).

4. I get some once in a while |
|
Not as much as I used to. I also use to go hunting back in my teens and ate everything I shot. My last trip I almost got shot twice, so I decided I would rather be offered the spoils instead of being a carcass.

5. Ahhh, do I love venison |

Where I grew up, the deer are so plentiful you could not pass a day without seeing them. They're all cornfed, too, so the taste is wonderful. I agree completely about eating what you hunt. My husband's a hunter, and won't shoot anything we aren't interested in eating. Which is why he won't go on bear hunts, since in his opinion predators don't make good eating.

Animals who eat meat are not good to eat.

8. Bears usually don't eat that much meat |
|
They are omnivores.
I have never had bear, so I can't speak to the taste.

They certainly are omnivores. Nonetheless, everyone I talk to says they don't taste good.

I used to hunt with an older brother, and we would hunt deer (white tail) in Wisconsin, mule deer, elk, and antelope in "Big Sky Country". Since we had a farm with over 500 head of Black Angus and more dairy than I care to count, we hunted for the sport and to aid in culling the herd. But, we knew families in "my little town" that did not have the means to meat, as we did and sent the meat to the butcher and then to those families who needed meat for the winter season, anonymously.
We were very blessed with what we had, versus those who needed....:-)

There are 'soup kitchens' out there that will gladly take unwanted hunting kills and use that food for their kitchens to help feed the hungry.
To kill a deer and then just leave the rotting carcus behind or for just the skin is horrible.
Along with my family history of hunting, I have many family members who were also farmers. Deer is like cockroaches to them that can be very destructive and costly to their crops.
BTW, Welcome to DU :hi:

21. Well the town I grew up in was so small, |
|
It wasn't until I was 13 that I realized the town's name wasn't "Resume Speed", and we knew the families who were in need, so giving up a kill wasn't much of a problem when we had so much. And mind you, those were in the days, long before we heard the term "soup kitchen". My brother taught me the values of giving to others, when I was so spoiled with what we had.

But so is answering a rescue call for the many deer who go thru windshield of a car and killing a mother and her young family. There comes a time when the herds need to be culled, otherwise they will die of "deer-wasting diseases", and DNR will send out sharpshooters to cull the herds.
I used to hunt with a gun, but then decided there was more of a sport involved in hunting with a 50 lbs. compound bow. Oh, the tracking of an animal if your "hit" is not perfect. I'm talking for miles, and miles,,,

I was tired of listening to a smaller town than mine brag about their "archery championships", and I told my brother I wanted to silence their bragging. I took their trophy for 2 consecutive years, but going into the woods and aiming at a "moving target" is a different story. My brother would say "You think they'll pose for you, just to take their life" ?
