Why does hot chocolate scald off your taste buds but coffee doesn't? |
It takes about 3 days to get them back too.

1. Not to make light of your discomfort, but you haven't had coffee in my house! |
We use the on-the-stove percolator so our coffee needs an ice cube to cool down :-)

2. Hot cocoa retains heat better |
via the milk sugars, etc.
Just a guess.

3. Cold milk and sugar lower coffee's temperature |

4. Because you're drinking your chocolate too hot? |
I use the hot water out of my water cooler/heater and it's just right. Actually, I usually pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds because all the booze I put in it cools it off.

6. I think the fat and sugar in cocoa makes hot water hotter, |
and they also make the liquid more viscous, so the heat is more likely to stick to your tongue. Maybe.

7. You don't normally boil water for coffee. Tea and hot chocolate normally |
are mixed with boiling water.
