Geez, my wife was a little bitty thing for many years and wore size one. And she never even bore the slightest resemblance to that woman in the picture. That woman's legs look like pipe cleaners. That looks unhealthy to me. It looks like there is barely any muscle mass to take stress off the joints.

Please don't start this. Some women are naturally thin, just as some women are naturally bigger. There is no reason to disparage someone for being a size 0. I wear a 0 sometimes and I'm perfectly healthy.

it's about making women feel inadequate by bombarding them with these images of something impossible (and undesirable) to achieve by almost every woman - so they'll fell compelled to BUY stuff.

compare women in "men's" magazines to women in "women's" magazines.

64. Fashion Designers Want Human Clothes Hangers
They're not interested in you looking at the woman. They want you looking at the clothing. The less there is to look at, the more you look at the clothes. It's got nothing to do with sexy, i think. The only reason they don't use mannequins is that they can't have a dress dummy walk up and down the runway.

29. Jesus... this needs to stop!
1) If you're trying to lose weight, a healthy weight is NOT a size 0! Doctors expect you to aim for a HEALTHY weight, not a model's weight! Size 12 all the way!

2) If I can count your ribs, then you very much need to see your doctor. Right away.

3) What is a "stone?" Brits, can you help me here? Can I guess 20 lbs.?

4) This makes me angry because I believe people get defensive about their weight because they think the clinical expectations ARE to be like a model! Wrong - it's to be healthy! Like Ms. Hunter here.

5) I would love to see more curvy models. What happened to them? When Cindy Crawford walked the runway she was a size 8! Today she would be considered too large.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! This stuff drives me nuts!

65. Two things.
1. I wear a size 0 to 2, depending on brand. I am not an unhealthy weight. I am 5'4" and 115 pounds. Not unhealthy at all.

2. You could probably count my ribs if you saw me in a bikini. It's the way I'm built. I do not need to see my doctor about it.

72. If you're healthy, then you're healthy! Why even worry about it?
I am 5'8" and have weighed as little as 125 lbs. as an adult (I'm now around 150 or so.) When I was 125 lbs. friends and family thought I was emaciated, but I was athletic and felt quite good. And I constantly endured the torment of my not so thin friends. I was treated as a freak because I was THIN.

But what I see above on that girl, who doesn't even weight 90 lbs., is not healthy!

Why do people get so defensive about this, when health and not weight is the issue?

78. Oh good grief. I don't know many Size 0 women, and you...
Edited on Tue Nov-28-06 05:02 PM by Writer
obviously are that one exception. I live in Colorado which has nationally the lowest average BMI index in the country. Even then, I don't see many Size 0 women. Count yourself as a pleasantly petite exception. I am certain that when you don a swimsuit you don't look like the chick above. When I was at my thinnest, I had a few ribs showing, too, but not like that! In my mind, she's at least 5'7" tall but still wears your size. How can that be healthy?

On edit: P.S. The smallest I've ever been, at 5'8" tall and 115 lbs. at 19 years-old, was a size 4 to 6. If I were your height at that age, I'd probably be a size 0, too, and would be snapping at people for judging me, too! But I still got judged, anyway. Thin women can't win, either. I have received eyerolls by women at the gym, cluck-clucks about my eating nothing but celery. I look at them and think they look fine. I think keeping a bell curve of average weight in mind is a good thing - some will be on one extreme or the other.

79. No, I don't look like her, and that's the point.
I am certainly not that "one" exception - there are lots of women built like me. I just get sick of people harping about "size 0" and the old saw that visible ribs or "the ladder" on one's chest are sure signs of malnutrition.

People throw around the "size 0" benchmark often as the hallmark of anorexia. Do I think it's silly that any size has to be called "0" at all? Sure. But there's nothing inherently wrong with being size 0.

I was anorexic at one time. Believe me, I know the difference between unhealthy and healthy. If I gained enough weight to obscure my "ladder" and my ribs, I'd be overweight.

That must have been a hard battle, but it sounds like you have overcome it! :)

I wish we would keep in mind HEALTH and not WEIGHT. When I discuss weight with overweight people, it's a lose-lose situation. I mean, there is nothing that I can say that expresses to them: "Hey, you don't have to look like Kate Moss, but you need to mind what carrying all that extra weight is NOT good for your health!"

This topic is so personal for some.

76. Your comment is completely wrong.
If I was a size 12, my doctor would put me on a diet. I would be obese.

Secondly, you can see my ribs if I don't have a shirt on. It's the way I'm built. I also have visible stomach muscles. I am not emaciated or starving, it's just my body.

You are being disparaging to a whole other group of women while trying to protect the first group. Why?

88. You know, I'm looking down now, and I see a few ribs...
and I'm now a rather full Size 8. I don't mean to demean the "Size 0" crowd, in the same way that I don't mean to demean the "Size 16+" crowd, or any other weight crowd in this thread. No statement is perfect, because there always is the exception to the rule. I'm sorry, but Size 0 is on the left side of the bell curve of average sizes in the US. It is not a usual size. And I am a reasonable enough person to understand that typically a person who is that size is healthy, but more petite than normal and necessitates a smaller size lest their pants will not fit. However, when I look at the chick in the picture above, I'm think, "that women is a Size 0 model? That is unhealthy!" - not because she is a Size 0, but because she is tall and therefore looks dangerously thin.

Hell, if I was gonna say ANYTHING about the girl at the bottom, is that she could use a bigger badonkadonk (and that would be stupid of me, because I can't even see it lol...but you can always use MORE!!!). The one on the top would probably be better if she was a healthier weight, but she is just too skinny for me.

On edit: as a girl and a young woman who all her life was deemed "too thin to be attractive" I fucking hate these threads. Some of us are naturally thin. We wish we had the big caboose and the tits, but we don't. And to the men who like to see it jiggle, fortunately for you there is a hell of a lot of adipose tissue out there for you to grab hold of. Sigh. Thank god for the few men who don't mind seeing a rib or two.

With all the PC talk on the board, I'm surprised at how overt is the prejudice against being thin. From my vantage point, it's the heavier women who are more accepted by society, not the thin girls. And for what it's worth, a model is a model. She is not supposed to be the ideal weight; she's supposed to be gaunt and otherworldly. I don't for one instant compare myself with the skeletal model and she's clearly thin to the point of being ill; but in my very humble opinion the other woman looks chunky to me. If you all can see thin where I see normal, it shouldn't surprise that I see fat where you see physically perfect.

My irritation is apparent in my post. I don't mean to offend, but I did

On edit: That's a lie. I was being offensive. I apologize.

92. Exactly -- I said this is another post
I have friends who are naturally very thin -- they don't look like this... and, I just don't mean their bodies -- I mean THEM. You can tell they're healthy.

She seriously looks like she's about to kneel over and die.

Seriously.... she isn't thin... or skinny... she's emaciated and very unhealthy.

The woman on the bottom does NOT have "thunder thighs."

Good grief.

45. Can you imagine the strain she puts on her body?
And she is encouraged to do so by those idiots telling her she has a great body. Why do so many big shots of the fashion industry want their female models to look like prepubescent boys?

This emaciated look.

As I've said, I have some skinny friends, who eat and eat to try to gain weight (damn them!)... but skinny healthy does not look like this...

Did you see her in the swimsuit? Very, very sad...

I almost wish I hadn't

I also have skinny friends, both male and female, the difference is they don't starve temselves, and therefore don't look starved. And their bones don't protrude quite like that.

90. not anymore. It's "food insecure" or something.
As someone who has been both skinny and heavy, yet still (barely) within both extremes of my 'normal' weight range, these conversations drive me nuts. For one thing, I got made fun of - often by the same people, and even more often by family - for BOTH bring too skinny and being too fat! Generally, I think it's fucked up, and it really saddens me when people can't accept themselves - or worse, can't accept others - for who they are. I'm not

Sure, make an effort to be healthy; I can respect that. I can also respect that everyone has different tastes in people, but come on! "Thunder thighs"?!? Fuck that. Yes, the top girl looks emaciated, but she looks like she forces herself to look that way.

68. Yeah it is but
you're almost socially acceptable at size 8 and a size 6 will get you all kinds of warnings to watch your weight. Anything over a 6 will impact on your ability to get a job that calls for face to face customer relations (outside of being a retail clerk) and will be a considering factor in your professional life.

57. They're not looking for SUPERmodels but for RUNWAY models
There is a difference. And for runway modeling, Jen is a bit too heavy. Just a bit, but too heavy nonetheless. (The girl at the top is way past the point of "slender" and is approaching "Darfur resident" proportions.)

What she needs to do is to take her well-proportioned, absolutely fantastic body, which is more than suitable for almost all other kinds of modeling, put it and her book on the first plane to JFK, and start hitting places like Elite and Ford. Jen isn't a runway model anyway. She's a print model, and if her voice is good she'd be a good television model too. If she knows how to act, she'd be great in movies too.

Jen is a girl who could easily command a $3000 day rate and work 200 days a year for the next fifteen years because she's got what I consider the most important attribute of a good model: her image will sell product because every man in America would kill to have a wife/girlfriend who looks like her. If she's selling something, it must be good. (Hell, I'd love to have her in my kitchen department because I think she'd move a lot of installs.)

The girl at the top? About half of all runway models are scary-looking women, and she's definitely a frightening presence. Too fucking skinny, no face, shitty haircut and that lipstick has GOT to go. Five hundred day rate, max, three weeks of work a year at the big Fashion Weeks and she'll work for five years before she gets just a hair too saggy and the phone rings no more.

It's good Jen lost. Now she can get a real modeling job.

She's definitely got that curvy, va-va-va-voom thing goin' on. What's even scarier is how different they look in swimsuits--the judges told Marianne she has a "sensational" body for modelling? :wtf:

87. Considered ideal by whom?
I think models look the way they're supposed to - like human clothing hangers. They have a certain body type that clothes look best draped around. You basically have to be a genetic anomaly to be built like a model - very tall, and very small-boned. Just like you have to be a genetic anomaly to play professional basketball, but you don't hear people bitching about not being 6'10" with a certain muscular structure. Or bitching about people who ARE that size and height.

91. I guess what confuses me
is just the idea that clothing *does* look the best on the small segment of the population with that type of body. Obviously, the tradition started somewhere so some important people must have thought this and continued thinking it for this to become the rule in the fashion industry. I don't really care about fashion myself, so I'm sure I'm oblivious to most of the customs and whys of how things are in that industry. But I guess I would just disagree that the particular, almost impossible to attain, type of body that has been deemed acceptable by the fashion industry for runway models really does the appeal of their clothing any favors. I'd personally rather see people who look healthy and attractive modeling clothing; I would think that would put the clothing in the best light- and I would think most people would feel that way. (Then again, I'm not planning on wearing anything being modeled by the female runway models being discussed- 'cause, like I said, 1) I'm a guy and 2) I don't care about fashion- so maybe that's why they don't care about the opinion of people like me! haha)

84. That's bizarre...
I'm always surprised at how warped the standards for being a model have become (and really, they seem to be staying the same or getting worse). If models are supposed to be advertising or showing clothing off, wouldn't it make sense to pick a person to wear them who more people find appealing?

Also, I'm surprised at how many think the second woman's thighs are big. Maybe they're proportionally bigger than those of women who have a different body type, but I'm willing to bet there are a good number of women (if not a majority) who, at a healthy weight, have a similar body type to the second model. Maybe I'm just partial to the "pear" shape, but I think the thighs are part of what makes the second model have a great body. She's just a very attractive woman. The fashion industry is really messed-up.
