If they play that fucking "Our Country" Mellencamp Chevy commercial once more
Edited on Mon Nov-27-06 11:05 PM by nytemare
I cannot be held responsible for what I might do.

That fucking ear worm will not leave my head.

Not only does its suckage reach previously unimaginable levels of sucktitude, it is a blatant ripoff of "This is My Country", "This Land is Your Land", AND "God Bless America".

And, did I say it fucking sucks?

STOP THIS COMMERCIAL!

   :wtf:

1. Yeah, I have found that song going through my head
many a time. Makes me want to put an ice pick in my ear.

3. I know!!
Then, you always get the straw-man argument that if you don't like the song, you are with the terrorists. I served my country. The song still sucks.

30. It was actually a tongue in cheek comment from a co-worker.
But, I am sure some freepers would make such a comment, without tongue in cheek.

:D

That feature would sell.

5. What I don't like about that spot is that it's totally cliche and plays to
conservative issues, targeting a demographic in which I have nothing in common.

Why is it that when Madison Avenue tries to depict Americana it's always as beer-drinking, truck-driving construction workers or cowboys?

14. Yeah he is-big time Dem with a capital D
old school working class progressive type Dem.

They started this campaign at the same time as they had Hannity giving away trucks on his radio show. I guess they were trying to go after "both sides".

Still the use of Rosa Parks in the first commercial was appauling but I doubt Mellencamp had any say about that.

I am tired of the commercial too but the song (see lyrics below) is really pretty good in a Woody Guthrie sense.

See "controversy" here. LOVE the F**K Fascism on the guitar part.

10. The most important lyrics are not used in the commercial:
Well, I can stand beside ideals I think are right/
And I can stand beside the idea to stand and fight/
This is our country

There's room enough here for science to live/
And there's room enough here for religion to forgive/

This is our country

And poverty could be/
Just another ugly thing/
And bigotry should be seen as only obscene/
And the ones that run this land/
Help the poor and common man/

This is our country

From the East Coast to the West Coast/
Down the Dixie Highway back home/
This is our country

Someday the dream will leave/
Or else it will come true/

And the more that we believe/
The better we will do/
(In this country, it belongs to me and you)
And let the voice of freedom ring out through this land/
This is our country

From the East Coast to the West Coast/
Down the Dixie Highway back home/
This is our country

25. Now that I've seen these, I like the spot a lot more
I did have it in mind that Mellencamp often sided for families and farmers and against big business so I felt it important to give him the benefit of the doubt w/ this spot--even though it DOES sound very much like Lee Greenwood's crap.

15. I *like* Mellencamp
So bite me :-P

I think it's hilarious that the righties are so dense they don't get when they're being mocked.

Even if you hate his music, you have to give Mellencamp props for the work he does to support liberal causes.

In fact, I used some of the same wording in my post, LOL!

I've been a fan of John Mellencamp since 1979.

19. Read this:
Chevrolet’s marketing efforts kick-off at the State Fair of Texas on September 27, where Silverado 200,000 Mile Club members will help unveil the all-new, Silverado to the public. From there, a caravan of Silverados from across the generations, led by its newest member, will embark on a 3-day journey to Camden, New Jersey, site of this year’s Farm Aid. Chevy Silverado’s “Drive for Farm Aid” will make three stops for street parties in Nashville, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. Along the way, the caravan will raise funds for Farm Aid and collect non-perishable food items for local food banks. Farm Aid is an organization whose mission is to “Keep America Growing” and John Mellencamp is one of its founding fathers.

And this:

Mellencamp commented, "I wrote this song to tell a story about some of the challenges our country faces and how our beliefs and ideals can help us meet them, a message of hope and tolerance. It's a song that is all about standing up for the working people who are the backbone of our nation."

John Mellencamp is not a conservative, not a Bush-lover, not a freeper, not a jingoist, or any of the other names I've seen hurled at him since this campaign began. Like him or hate him, love or hate the song - but give the man props for his liberal, grassroots ideals and his many years of support to worthy causes, including his pet project Farm Aid.

21. It Is, However, A Song Dripping With Treacle
I knew what it was about, but it's good you posted this so others who didn't know would read this. I still think the song is maudlin crap. I admit i don't care for John's music, but from what i can tell, he's all right as a person.

How in hell do you get a recent-vintage Chevy pickup to go 200,000 miles?

Just like the National Anthem. It's not enough it was played every comercial break.
That song has got to go away soon.
