11. Practically under the Golden Gate Bridge...
Believe it, or not. Here's another angle that my friend carved and printed (the bridge is in the background). This little beach was Army property when I was a kid and we had to sneak under the fence to get in. Once in, we were left alone to our own devices, unmolested, to explore and camp in the tunnels and abandoned batteries. Today, it is part of GGNRA, and for safety purposes all the cool structures have been torn down or buried, and swarms of people visit, spoiling it for the locals like me. Times have been better.

14. My dad loved places like that...
He was always trying to get special permission for his group of military history buffs to visit virtually abandoned military sructures from 1898 through WWII. Sometimes he succeeded, and they'd occasionally even get a guided tour.

26. Some of the structures were even older that that
Some dated from 1872 and 1876. It was a real shame to see them buried and bulldozed! Wonderful brickwork - gone!

Within one mile of that beach, there are 1950's era Nike missile bases, Second World War 'Sixteen inch' gun batteries, nineteenth century Rodman gun emplacements, and a civil war era brick fort. I appreciate and condone what your dad is trying to do. I really do.

29. Unfortunately, he passed away 13 years ago...
But the organization is still around, if you're interested. There are chapters all over the country. It's called CAMP...Council on America's Military Past. Here's their website: http://www.campjamp.org/

As a kid, my dad took us to just about every Civil War coastal fort that still existed, and a good number of battlefields and non-coastal defense fortifications, too. I don't regret it for a second.

It must have been sickening to lose the brickwork, especially. I remembe being amazed by the beauty of the early structures...

40. The brickwork is gone, but I have some of those bricks
I've collected bricks all my life (something my grandpa instilled in me). My big score came years later when I was doing work for GGNRA inside of Fort Point (the civil war era fort). I had to drive my truck through the ten foot wide sally port in order to deliver and install some casework for the gift shop. I noticed a pile of old loose bricks and was informed they had to tear them out to install a handicap restroom. They wanted to get rid of the bricks, so I offered to haul them away. A ranger helped load them! Hoot, they're in the backyard, too!

This is the entrance (notice the empty gun cradle - sister to the one below)

Your father might have found this photo disturbing - a Rodman gun lost to a WWII scrap metal drive

Even though obsolete, the guns sat unmolested at the fort for many years. Now gone forever.

56. Oh, Fort Point is still there, and now open to the public
It's a gem and a sister design (three tier) to Forts Sumter. It was closed to the public and boarded up while under the Army's jurisdiction, but it is now part of GGNRA and became a National Historic Site on October 16th, 1970. It would certainly have been on your fathers "to see" list.

The Golden Gate bridge was built around Fort Point (Look at the little arch on the right)

Fort Point sans bridge

The lost and buried structures I spoke of are around Kirby Cove/Gravelly Beach to the left and just off of both photos. The actual batteries were buried, while outbuildings (mess, latrine, headquarters, housing, etc) were razed.

62. I think it is very busy in the summer, but the rest of the year much less crowded - although
it can be very cold there in any season except summer! So probably September would be OK, after Labor Day but before it starts getting really cold. Bear Lake is probably the easiest to get to, you can drive right to the parking lot and walk around the lake. It is the start of a trail to Nymph Lake, Emerald Lake and Dream Lake, so the farther up the trail you go the more sparse the crowds will be. And there are many other lakes and ponds there.

60. What a charming place! I had to look up its history...
Martham has always been a large village. The Saxons settled here about AD600 and gave the village its name, "the ham of the martens", the home of the polecats. These cream-coloured ferret-like animals were found wild in Broadland marshes until about a century ago. About AD800 Danish colonists settled densely in the Fleggs, giving their names to many villages which end in "by" (Hemsby, Filby, Ormesby, Oby etc.). Martham it would appear was large enough to absorb these newcomers and retain its Saxon name.
At the time of the Norman conquest in AD1066, the manor at Martham belonged to the bishop of Thetford, Herbert de Losinga. When he moved to Norwich, built the cathedral there and founded the priory, he gave his land at Martham to the new monastery. During the middle ages, Martham provided the monks in Norwich with wheat for their bread, barley for their beer and peat dug from the marshes for their fuel.
Martham was a large thriving village about the year AD1300 with a population of about 1000. Even after the Black Death which was extremely severe in this area, Martham was wealthy enough to build the large parish church, which has been dubbed the "Cathedral of the Fleggs"
When the monasteries were dissolved, the manor was leased to a series of landlords, many of whom lived away from the village. Martham has never had a single family that dominated village life. It was a community of farmers, fishermen, craftsmen and tradesmen. Nineteenth century directories tell of grocers, butchers, tailors, drapers, shoemakers, basket makers, wheelwrights, joiners, blacksmiths, millers, brick makers, bricklayers, thatchers, glaziers, wherrymen and watchmakers. Indeed a village large enough to be self sufficient and self supporting.
Brick making was carried on at several places in the parish, one being near Martham ferry. This is why most bricks in the older houses are of the same appearance, texture and colour, the so called "Norfolk Red".
A fair was always held on the village green on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of July and was probably a general market where traders and peddlers sold goods not usually available in the village.
The population of Martham in 1890 was 1097 inhabitants, today that number has increased to over 3000.

It looks lovely :hi:

75. It really depends on
what time of year the pic is taken. The smog thing definitely goes in cycles. Starting in late May, we get a thing the locals call "June Gloom"--which is actually the marine layer. It looks like fog and of course the smog attaches to it. The marine layer leaves in late June, but it seems like the smog gets trapped basically all summer--because it's hot and there's very, very little breeze.

Then, in October, we get the Santa Anas, which blow all that smog away. And now that it's "cold" and breezy, the sky is actually clear. I'm guessing that pic was taken in the winter. ;)

And that's probably WAY more than you ever cared to know about LA smog! :hi:

76. Palisade Head (in MN)
When I was still little and an only child, my Mom used to take me there every summer to pick blueberries. We got ice cream pails full, ate them with cream, and my Dad made blueberry wine from them. I stepped in more than one hill of ants up there, but it was beautiful and the view was amazing. Every year I mean to make a trip up the shore and go there, but I never manage to.

Edited on Wed Nov-29-06 11:00 AM by QMPMom
This has been a very special place in my life for many years. It is so peaceful and I love going there and just sitting on a bench and soaking in the tranquility. It's not far from my parent's house and we always go there when we go back home for a visit. It's also where my DH and I got officially engaged.

The Archabbey Church.

Inside the Archabbey Church. We were sitting on the seats on the right side of the photo when DH gave me my engagement ring. The Monks were singing a beautiful Gregorian Chant at the time.We wanted to get married there but couldn't get permission.

The Archabbey Church at night.

124. It is so eerie there
I remember reading about it as a kid, and finding it strangely fascinating. It's quite something standing at the base of that mountain, looking up and imaging the side of it swooping down. There are huge boulders - weighing a ton or more - a few kilometres away. They didn't move any, just cleared them off the railroad tracks and eventually, for the highway.

There were also a number of coal mining accidents in the area. There is a graveyard in a couple of towns down that holds the bodies of something like 50 or 60 miners killed in an accident not far off the Frank slide date.

I love old, abandoned buildings. Every time I pass by one, I feel the need to go in and have a look round. :-)

I like your mission! Neat!

A little chilly, but I'll have to get used to it! I'd prefer Calgary, as I know the city better (and there are the aformentioned chinooks!)

Hopefully we can get this place sold in the spring or summer. I've also got another genealogy trip scheduled for the spring, to Pennsylvania and Maryland. I've got to get my traveling out of the way before we go since I'll be stuck up there for awhile until I get all my paperwork approved! At least we can go to BC. I've got cousins there too!

Hopefully I'll get to meet you soon! The last trip was so whirlwind I barely had time to breathe!

112. Ghost towns fascinate me...
We had a little "ghost neighborhood" here for awhile. It was a temp housing subdivision for WWII vets. For 40 years after the homes had been demolished, the street lights would still come on in the neighborhood, and garden plots still bloomed. I once met a man who had lived their briefly. He told me the government had issued them cardboard refrigerators.

They dug the whole area up about 15 years ago, and created a lake.

135. It is less touristy, although I understand it's getting "discovered"
There are some all-inclusive resorts on the island, but other than those it has retained its local flavor. Rodney Bay, where the layover hotel is, is pretty much a sleepy little harbor town, where most of the businesses are owned by and serve locals. It's definitely one of the most beautiful islands in the Carribean.

I'll be back there this afternoon - one of the few remaining "perks" of the job.

139. Mom and Dad
are in east Tennessee, in the same house where I grew up. There's just something about a porch that tugs at me.

140. BTW
The people in the porch photo are, left to right, my cousin Harry, my brothers Woody and Randy, and Harry's wife Maggie.

146. I know what you mean about a porch...
A house doesn't seem like a home without one, for me...

123. Here are two I turn and return to often (in my mind at least)
This is Vernazza, Italy. If I won the lottery, I'd be on a plane within a week.

This is Yellowstone National Park. If I found out I had two weeks to live, I'd be on my way here. (That may sound morbid; I don't mean it to. I just can't think of many places I feel more at home or at peace :) )

132. Yellowstone's on my list of must-see places...
I'm always amazed by pics of European seaside villages, and the way they're all squeezed in the small space of a cliff, as if the houses were simply sardines...
It looks charming! :toast: I hope you win that lottery!

Here's a view I really like, the Matanuska Glacier from the Glenn Highway north of Anchorage.

138. Austin, my hometown
Edited on Sat Dec-02-06 07:09 AM by fudge stripe cookays
Moved here when I was 4, left when I was 28. It's changed a lot, and not in a good way, but it's still home.

148. If I had to live in Texas,
Austin is the city I'd choose to make my home.

I have an old friend who conducts an orchestra there. :-)

151. That's the problem though.
Everybody cool wants to move to Austin, when the rest of the state has lots of cool things in it as well. It's just been disguised by all the complete assholes the last few years, that people think Austin is the only good thing in this state.

NOT SO, sez Fudge. :hi: GOG

Austin is a beautiful city! I was just there over Thanksgiving visiting my wife's family.

154. Me too!
When I was still healthy enough to walk the whole thing it was invigorating to do that walk then just stand there under the Mo-Pac bridge feeling that BREEZE on the river! One of my favorite things about Austin.

Oh, and the yummy pastries at Mozart's. And the fried spinach at Z'Tejas. And shopping at Book People. And Waterloo. And Breed and Company...And...oh never mind. Now I'm getting homesick!
