My first sports column (re: Eagles)....

Is This Finally The Year For The Eagles?

The life and times of a Philadelphia sports fan are rarely easy, and frequently tumultuous.

I can recall at least 4 times in the past year when I've been broken, crushed, or reduced to a slobbering mass of crap thanks to one or more of my favorite teams. I'm guessing my wife, Kerri, can probably remember a few more that I've cleverly edited from my consciousness...

So now, for the 3rd straight season, I've got my hopes pinned to the Eagles to end the 20-year (you read that correctly) championship drought in the City of Brotherly Love.

If that seems like a long time for a town with teams in all 4 of the major sports to go without winning a championship, well, it is...

Opinions welcome, thanks!

1. Oh, Brian, Brian, Brian

You know it's our fate to NEVER have winning teams in Philly. Heartbreak and disapointment are our eternal companions. Brace yourself Brian. It's gonna get rough around here in the next few weeks.

It's just that we don't have CHAMPIONSHIP teams. :(

6. Yep, Philly teams are something like 4-12 in Championship Series
across all sports since 1972.

Breaks down like this:

Flyers: 2-5
Phillies: 1-2 (plus a whole handful of NLCS losses in the late 70s)
Sixers: 1-4
Eagles: 0-1

Winning teams aplenty, but, yes there is something to the Philly Curse.

But I take hope from the fact that, as with the Sixers and Phillies, that a team which keeps winning in a short 5-7 year contiguous period, with a great coach, can usually break through the Philly Curse for one year.

Is this the year? Maybe.

7. That's the toughest part....
The Flyers are always competitive, the Sixers have been good, the Phillies are rising, and the Eagles are consistently solid now...Just no titles to show for it...

:-(

2. I feel your pain
I'm a huge Philly sports fan, from the Flyers to the Eagles. The really frustrating thing about the drought is that we've had numerous opportunities to win championships since 1983 - the Phillies have been to two World Series, the Flyers to at least three Stanley Cup finals, and the Sixers to an NBA finals. It's not like all our teams stink.

5. True, but

While I'm pretty confident that the Birds can take the NFC, (and this breaks my heart) I don't see 'em getting past the Pats.
