I have a couple scans of album art (this being among them) that I won't post for fear of them getting me thrown in prison. They were controversial, but still technically legal, at the time. In today's environment ... <shudder>

10. Ever seen this one? It's definitely risque...

This one was pretty controversial for its time (1972), but the album bombed so it's probably less remembered now than it would be otherwise. I'd read about in a couple of music-related books and was always a little curious to find it. Anyway, the removed slice from the pie reveals a fairly detailed rendering of female genitalia. Yep...

Here is a link with more about the cover:

http://friends.s5.net/mazzini/plosce/pie.html

I finally located a copy in a batch of records a couple of weeks ago. The copy I found is actually the rarer but less notorious censored version, in which the removed slice has been bricked up and now has a flag stuck in it! No kidding; it's a pretty weird, if no longer risque, cover, in itself.

I'd always heard the album sucked, but it's actually not too bad. It kinda sounds like a cross between a boogie-rock group and a horn band like Chicago, so I like it, but I guess I can understand why music critics would hate it!

18. In the same vein...
This one has kind of a funny story behind it. It had to be withdrawn and reissued with an "airbrushed" cover, because people thought that the member on the left was revealing his own member!

The protruding "member" is actually just his hand sticking out from behind his jacket, but it creates a funny illusion!

21. And...
here's a foreign picture sleeve for Steppenwolf's "For Ladies Only." It's also the inside album cover art for the American album.

The owner of this car apparently took the idea of purchasing a vehicle as a form of penis extension literally!

35. From the same era/genre
Edited on Thu Nov-30-06 01:29 AM by last_texas_dem
This one was considered too "raunchy" by several retailers and ended up being censored and re-issued. I'm not sure if it's really risque so much as just as really ugly!

It's one case where I honestly prefer the "sanitized" version to the original:

28. Here's an obscure one
In fact, I'd never even heard of it until I googled "controversial album covers." It's by a seventies group called "Mama Lion" for the album Preserve Wildlife and features one of the band members breastfeeding a lion cub! I think it's kind of a cool cover, but apparently it met controversy and was reissued featuring the singer from only the neck up, behind what appear to be golden-colored prison bars. Kind of an interesting statement...

This infamous Blind Faith album cover was not surprisingly banned after a major public outcry.

BTW, as a kid I absolutely loved Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. Thanks for the posting that. It brings back good memories.
