Were You Born Where You Currently Live Or Are You A Transplant?
Where were you born?

Where do you currently live?

Why did you move?

Do you like where you are now?

I'll go first:
Washington, D.C. - the city not the suburbs

Currently live in NYC

Moved because I can't stand D.C. It's too suburban for me. No life in the city itself. Everyone lives in the MD and VA suburbs and spends thousands of hours commuting.

I love NYC. I just wish I had a little more money to really live well here.

1. Transplant...
Where were you born? In the suburbs of the great city of Minneapolis, MN

Where do you currently live? Boise, ID

Why did you move? My husband's job

Do you like where you are now? I like a lot of stuff about it - my close friends, my circle of friends and aquaintances and what we've built for ourselves here...Boise is bluer than some areas of the state, but the outlying suburban areas are so painfully red that it's hard to be in certain social and work-related situations and have to stifle some of my views. My husband and my best friend are both raging liberals, though, so that helps. My friend's mother is one of the staunchest lefty Dems I've ever met.

5. Transplant. Born in Toronto, Ontario.
Living in Bangor, Maine because, despite the fact that I told him a thousand times while we were dating that *I do not like snow or cold weather* my STBE husband proposed to me in the snow, and then moved me up here for his job. The place grows on you, but if it weren't for my kids I'd leave and never look back.

9. Hm...
Born: Park Ridge, IL (that's just where the hospital was -- my family lived in Arlington Heights)
Live: Milwaukee, WI (Bay View)
Moved, short version: Shacking up.
Moved, long version: Went to college in WI, got a job in Racine, moved there, got married, lost that job, got another job in Glendale, moved to Waukesha, got divorced, moved to Milwaukee (East Side), got tired of the East Side and when my SO and I decided to move in together, we picked Bay View.
Like it? Yep. Quiet but active neighborhood, relatively quick drive to campus (quit job in Glendale, started law school in downtown Milwaukee) but far enough away that, well, I don't live there.

Born: San Antonio TX (which, I have been helpfully told, is NOT in south Texas - south-central Texas, perhaps ?? If it moved to north Texas while my back was turned I'm going to be seriously pissed.)

Current home: Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Why did I move: Family migrated to Australia - some returned to the U.S., the rest stayed in Australia

Do I like where I am now: Yes, though I enjoy returning to the U.S. for visits (which I'm currently doing). I think my family as a whole is far better off for having made the move.

12. Transplant. Born and raised in Southern Indiana and moved to
Western Canada (Alberta) when I got married to a Canadian. I had the portable job and he didn't, so I was the one to move. I cried like a baby when I got to the border for immigration. Will not give up my US citizenship. Ever.

Love the city we live in. The province is okay. Would I willingly move to Canada again if I had a choice? No. Not for a million dollars. I won't get into why.

Where were you born? Atlanta, GA (the city, not the suburbs)

Where do you currently live? Central NC

Why did you move? My father was transferred to NC for his job in 1975---moving from Atlanta to NC was the most traumatic event of my life.

Do you like where you are now? Meh. I love the house I live in, but the city itself is extremely boring. The neighboring cities have more to do, but that's not saying a whole lot. I'd move back to Atlanta if presented with the opportunity.

I was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Moved to Danville, IL (at age 4) because of my dad being transferred.
Moved to metro Milwaukee (at age 13) because my dad changed jobs. We stayed here because my mom refused to move house again. I've lived in the metro Milwaukee area since. It's ok here but I've always wanted to live in New Mexico. My custody agreement keeps me here until my youngest is 18 (8 more years). After that all bets are off.

22. Transplant. NJ to PA
I was born in central NJ where I spent 27 years at three different residences. I moved to PA because even in the early 90's I couldn't afford to buy in NJ. I'm now in my second PA residencem though I still commute to NJ three days a week for work. I like it for the most part, mainly because most of my friends and activities are here.

23. Transplant, but within the same state.

Born in lowcountry SC.

Live in upstate SC.

Why did I move? At the time I was unemployed and there was a family home here, old and substandard housing, but livable, where I could live until I could get on my feet.

For much of my life, I SOOO wanted to get out of SC. But now I'm cool with staying here. My family is here and as I get older that matters more to me.

I just wish it wasn't so....RED. We have lots of transplants here from other states--mostly Northern. Maybe they'll change that. I hope.

32. Transplant, by choice.
Born in Detroit, spent later childhood years in a suburb.

Moved to Ann Arbor.

Moved to San Francisco and lived there and up in the Sonoma County redwoods for a decade. Met and married Mr. Z. and after a couple of years, we realized we would like to own a house and couldn't afford S.F. (and didn't want to move to the suburbs of S.F.). We went on a scouting expedition for a new hometown and chose Mpls./St. Paul.

I love Minnesota. I've visited most of the lower 48 states, so I know that I made an informed decision. Neither of us has family here, and both of us have family living in warm places that other people consider very desirable, but we still think Minnesota was the best choice.

Would I move? I doubt it since there isn't another place in the U.S. that I'd rather live. But, when my kids are grown, who knows?

35. I'm what the Japanese call a "U-Turn" person
Born in Minneapolis while my parents were living in what was once a small town and is now a southern suburb

We moved to Minneapolis when I was two.

When I was six, we moved to a town in southern Wisconsin, where I spent most of my elementary school years.

When I was in the middle of sixth grade, we moved to a suburb of Minneapolis. The six years I spent there put me off suburbs for life.

Went back into the city for college.

After graduation, I went to Ithaca, New York to study Japanese.

This was followed by graduate school at Yale. That very long stint of professional studenthood was punctuated by time living in Japan.

After I got tired of being a professional student and seeing no job posssibilities in the Reagan recession, I moved back to Minneapolis and survived on temping and part-time teaching jobs.

Got my first real job and moved out to Oregon. Taught at two different schools there, one state and one private.

Moved to Portland when I became a free-lance translator. For a long time, I thought that I would never leave. However, Portland absolutely stopped working for me on a personal level. The people I was closest to either died, moved away, or turned weird, and other things were going wrong, too.

With great reluctance, I moved back to Minneapolis. It's better on a personal level, but I still miss the physical environment of Portland (Mt. St. Helen's out my kitchen window!) and especially the transit system  . I HATE driving, and the Twin Cities, so progressive in so many other ways, are in the Dark Ages when it comes to public transit.

47. Born and raised in San Francisco...
and now I live in the house I grew up in. I spent four months living with and getting to know my sister in Virginia when I was 19, but, other than that, I have been glued to my hometown.

I can't imagine leaving SF for long -- if I moved it would have to be somewhere pretty radical, like NYC, London, or Paris. My sister tried to talk me into moving to Arkansas because it was so cheap to live there -- I told her, "If I am going to move from SF is sure as hell isn't going to be to Arkansas!"

My heart truly is here -- I suspect I'll go down with the ship in The Big One. :)

Love it. We're both country folk.

51. Another transplant here
Born in Mississauga, ON

Now living in Edmonton, AB

Needed a change. Came to visit a sister one year and liked how laid back and friendly the city was, and moved here the following month.

No. I have some truly wonderful friends here, but I'm tired of this city, and of the mentality of this province.

70. Snow sounds lovely....
We went from a high of 58 degrees (F) one day, to a high of 19 the next. I need some snow, so I'll expect it to be cold when I step outside, instead of being shocked. :wow:

77. Wow!
Perhaps you did get our previous crazy weather system.

It was (in F) -13 Wednesday, and Thursday it reached 26. It felt positively tropical.

Now it's back to -13. x(

Perhaps you'll see a warming trend in the next couple of days. :hi:

Where were you born? Columbus, OH

Where do you currently live? Outside Tulsa, OK

Why did you move? Got married.

Do you like where you are now? NO!! But I live out in the country so I can isolate myself from the right-wing fundie mentality I'm surrounded by all day. That being said, I've met and made some good friends in the peace, justice, and human rights community here so there have been some good things. And I wouldn't trade my husband for any reason on earth.

I was born in a micropolitain area in Ohio. I lived briefly in another micropolitain area when I was little in Ohio before returning to the same micropolitain area. I originally moved out of state to go to college.
I currently live in rural Wisconsin, in a village/city (in Wisconsin town means something else). It is where I got a job.
It is alright here. There was more going on in the summer. It seems that everyone is hibernating now. At this point in my life, I am a bit antisocial, in a hermit sort of way, so I don't care. If I change my mind, perhaps I can become part of this community.

Where were you born? Springfield IL

Where do you currently live? St Louis MO

Why did you move? I HATE, LOATHE and DESPISE Springfield IL..it is SO conservative. I was way into Dr Who when I contemplated moving to St Louis. At the time I moved here there were regular Dr Who conventions in St Louis. I had a couple of friends here and they were looking for a third roommate. I got a job and moved down here.

Do you like where you are now? Yes. I like the fact the Jewish community here is larger than that in Springfield.

Born in Long Beach, CA.

Now living in the town just north of the LBC... Lakewood, CA.

I've lived in Redondo Beach and Torrance, and I grew up in Lomita.

I've never lived more than 20 miles from the hospital where I was born.

I have never lived more than six miles from The Pacific Coast Highway.

I feel blessed. From my 39th floor perch in downtown Los Angeles (office), I can see the ocean, the mountains, the Hollywood sign... I'm home.

Born in Texas.

Now in Mississippi, but have lived in both places while growing up and as an adult.

Moved because my parents did, as a kid. Moved for work and for luuuv as an adult.

Like Mississippi, but would rather be in Texas. If I could take my land and house and move it to Texas, I'd go back in a heartbeat.

But when I was quite young (so technically my parents transplanted me).

I kinda love Milwaukee. And I kinda wouldn't mind living there again. Since I am in school for the next 5 years, won't happen any time soon, but maybe UWM will hire me when I graduate. Or Marquette. :)

69. Here goes--
I was born in a tiny town in the Texas panhandle because my mom went home to have her baby where her family could help (dad was in the service). I grew up in Detroit where my dad's family lived because he was a total momma's boy. I moved to Seattle ostensibly to go to school, but really to get as far away from the family as possible. Yes, I like Seattle, but it's getting out of control.

71. everyone in Morgantown WV's a "transplant"...
except for my Oktoberain... she's been 'replanted'

Me?! Been everywhere...

Born in south Florida, grew up in Charlotte NC.

Current resident of Morgantown WV, by way of London OT, Utica NY, and Harrisonburg VA.

Why?! Does 'because of a girl' sound too cliche'?!

It's true... this is her hometown, so after a lot of moving around for a few years, we moved here and settled in back in her hometown.

At almost 5 years, i've now lived here longer than some of my profs at WVU.

while my dad was enrolled in the School of Mines. My parents moved back to the DC area, where they were born and raised, when I wasn't quite 2. I went to school in Baltimore, living in the city for 4 years. Then I moved back to the DC area. I wouldn't mind transplanting to New England if I could make a living there.

75. Born in Ohio, now in Alaska
I lived in Colorado, Texas, back to Colorado, California, Oregon, and back to California in between. I've been here since 1975. I moved up here because my parents had moved up here in 1969, and after visiting them a couple of times, I knew I had to live here too. Alaska's the only place for me now. I love it here.

Yes. Boone County has a fairly strong Democratic party. The town is 'homey'. I don't like the access to higher ed, though.

80. Homebody
Born in Toledo Ohio, now live about fifteen miles out. My family goes back in this area to 1820. To paraphrase Doc Grahmn from Field of Dreams: "I was born here, I live here, I'll likely die here, with no regrets". Maybe when the old folks are gone, we might move, but content for now.

81. Midwest Blues... LOL
Well, let's see.. was born in Georgia, USA, but my parents moved when I was only a baby (Army brat), but lived most of my childhood and early adult life in Maryland, USA.

I Currently live in Indiana, USA.

We moved, partly because of smoke damage (townhouse next to us had a fire, and everything in ours had smoked damage), partly because of the crime in the area even though we lived in a decent area, and we had a baby and didn't want to raise her in an area where there were 3 shootings in the last 6 months we lived there, so we decided to move to Indiana when my husband's parents moved to Indiana, we thought moving to a small town away from the big Tri-State area of Washington DC/VA/Maryland where crime is high would be more conducive to her growing up.

Can't really say I do or don't like it where I live now. If I had to choose, I'd say I enjoy it for the most part. Cost of living is lower by far, its less tense and hurried up here, people are a little more helpful here, and you can get by on a lot less money here than on the East Coast. I do miss having things to do after early evening hours (6:00 PM most local stores and areas of activity and interests are closed, come 9:00 PM most out of town areas - places that take us almost an hour's drive to get to - about 90% are closed - and 11:00 PM your just plumb outta luck.) Most smaller towns (and we DO live in a very small and out of the way town) have no public transportation whatsoever, so unless you have a working car, your totally screwed. LOL

Ahhh, such is the life in a small down-n-out out of the way tiny town in the Midwest!!! Sweet bliss! LOL :P

82. Mine:
I was born and raised in Decatur, Illinois, in Central Illinois. I moved to Dallas, Tx in 1984, had some unfortunate circumstances in my life (which I will not get into here) and moved back to Decatur 2 years later. I then moved to Champaign, Illinois in 1986 and lived there until 1994, when I moved to Chicago and I've lived here ever since. I moved to Chicago because I was looking for work and I wanted to move here anyway. I love Chicago...it's a terrific city. And Chicago is a gay friendly place to live, which as a gay man is very important to me.
