Christmas baking thread
I got off my backside and took the first step. My camera's missing so I only had the cell phone, but I'll post a better picture later.

3. That's pretty!
And looks like a lot of work!

I made some cranberry/date/pecan bars yesterday that are so good I don't know if they'll last long enough for me to pack them for the freezer for next week's party!

4. I've made something like that...
Ruby date bars with an oatmeal kinda crust? They're WONDERFUL! I usually wait until it's almost Christmas for those because they don't last around here, either. I can't resist them...

:P

5. Very impressive
I tried to do a gingerbread house with my son last year but it turned out to be more of a gingerbread ramshackle hut.

7. It's not that hard, actually....
takes a lot of time, but it can be fun. Every few years I add something else, this year it was the outhouse.

8. I think I've got it on my hard drive
now that Bonehead's computer-savvy friend transferred all my 'stuff' to the new computer. One year I demonstrated them on Good Morning Colorado and another channel's noon news, so I typed it up. I'll look.

Watch your e-mail.

9. How lovely!
I only made one once and said never again!

BTW, I spent last weekend looking for pix of gingerbread houses online, to use as examples with my students.... and didn't see any as cute as yours! I really like the windows and that pretzel fence! Mind if I "borrow" your ideas?

:) Thanks!

I'll try to remember to post a picture of God's Own Supply of Cookies and Stuff (TM) before I box it up and mail it this year.

That must've been a HUGE house. I'm not that industrious. Or wealthy.

Right now it'd probably taste pretty good...but no one would dare. And by Christmas...well...it'll have been sitting out for a month.

The dental bill would be...

:scary:

19. Cool. I made an Indian pueblo gingerbread structure one year
It was pretty cool looking but also kind of boring because there wasn't much to decorate with candies and such except the vigas and a few chili ristras. Oh and the obligatory licorice kiva ladder.

22. Trust me...
it all gets boring after a while. You can only put on so many Necco tiles before you go cross-eyed.

Even my kids have stopped asking if they can help. They just wait around and eat the leftover candy.

Wouldn't you think they'd have had enough after Halloween?

And do you have any idea how hard it is to find green hard candy? Yikes. Two green lifesavers to a roll.

21. first step heck!
that looks like the whole dang marathon race... :wow:

(and I read through the thread, so I did read the three days part :wow: :wow: :wow: )

How does one bake something twice? I'd just frost it with superglue

23. You bake it the first time just like the recipe says...
then, after it cools, you put it back in the oven at a lower temperature. You'd be amazed at how hard it gets after that second time.

And that icing IS like superglue. That shit's tough.

Sweet...but tough.

The only things that are inedible on there are the lights inside the house and the tray it's sitting on.

24. so it is edible?
even after sitting around for a month?

Kewl! At least for those with strong teeths... :P

I'm glad, because that's an awful lot of work for something that looks nifty until you throw it away...

(I'm starting to develop fellipsis)

:P

And yeah...it's edible, although I doubt you'd want to after a month.

Smells really good, though.
