Help! My mom is taking Oxycontin & turning into a Republican! |
|
OK. She's not turning Repuke BUT a slipped (Or herniated) disc this weekend has her on the old Oxyrush.
The seriously painful, SERIOUSLY PAINFUL, condition started on Saturday night and subsequent EMT and doctors visits have identified a disc problem as the source. On a side note one doctor, on Sunday, said that he couldn't "feel" the disc problem so it wasn't one...Oy vey...
The curious thing though is that Oxycontin seems to only kill her pain for about two hours, what a Republican drug, eh? A quick relief that's shortlived and expensive.
Makes me wonder why ol' Rush didn't go straight to "Reindeer dust" or "Belushi"

Beautiful comparison to Republican policy, JanMichael!
:D
Good luck to your mom, and I hope she's off the hard stuff soon. :-)

It's 100% hers! Hell she's brighter than most Rethugs even when drugged up.

My DH took Oxycontin for a couple of months when he had what was left of a disc removed & a couple of vertebrae fused, & he's still a flaming liberal.:D
Sorry to hear about your mom's pain. Has her doctor talked to her about Fentanyl? It worked really well for my husband--it comes in a transdermal patch, so the level of the medication in the bloodstream is much more constant.

9. Is it a powerful pain killer? If so I'll definately email her poste haste. |
|
Because I was there on Saturday night when the proverbial "wall" came crashing in and she was in BIG pain.
The Oxycrapola isn't really doing that much. I though it was like the cream of the crop?
Does she have to crush them up and snort them for real pain killing power?

11. It can be very powerful, in high doses |
|
It is often used for cancer patients, & for people with chronic back pain. My husband was on a 75 µg (microgram) patch, which he changed every 60 hours. It didn't get rid of all of his pain, but it gave him back his life.

14. I agree - use 75 mg 3 day patch, replace every 2 days, but run double |
|
patch most of the time.
Still takes a few hours to hit after new patch is applied, and then you sleep, but is really only good drug - runs about $920 for 15 patches (a month supply)- and hours 44 to 48 before new patch can be a pain - so to speak - :-)
and you still need Oxy for breakthrough pain -
someone should have told Rush about it !!!!
:-)

10. Best bet is a physical therapist |
|
Unless the disk is torn and needs surgery, a physical therapist is her best best. They will be able to teach her how to move her body and meet her daily tasks without further stressing the disk. No amount of pain killer will make the pain of a bad disk go away for very long. Two years ago, about this time, I could scarcely move without excruciating pain. A couple months with a PT and regular exercises and now I have regular twinges but life is livable again.
Poor woman is in so much pain, she's probably entitled to act like a repug -- only worried about herself -- until she gets her life back. ;-)

12. She's already scheduled for PT. |

It sounds like you have a good idea how much pain she was in too. What's amazing to me is that she's not a whiner, unfortunately that's me, and she completely broke down Saturday night.
You know what really pisses me off? My mother is insured so even though it's happened she'll get medical attention, so she'll be fine. But what galls me is how many mothers like mine (57 years old), in a country of 289,000,000 people, might have had the same thing happen last Saturday night and, because of fear of massive hospital and drug bills, just laid there in atrocious pain. Night after night, day after day, hoping the pain will simply go way.
That's what bothers me. No it doesn't "bother" me. It sickens me.

15. be VERY careful when dealing with herniated discs . . . |
|
I speak from experience . . . the pain is caused by the disc impinging on a nerve, or on a bundle of nerves . . . if those nerves are not decompressed, it can result in permanent nerve damage that can affect all functions below the waist, including muscularity, bowel and bladder, even sexual function . . . if your mom notices ANY symptoms beyond the pain -- numbness, bowel or bladder problems, etc. -- make sure she gets to an emergency room immediately and has an MRI . . . again, I speak from personal experience . . . my herniated disc was let go way too long, and I'm in my 13th year of permanent disability that is no fun at all . . .
