What kind of cat is best for a person with allergies
My dog is a toy poodle, and I am not allergic to her at all. I would love to get a cat that is know for not bothering people with allergies. Any suggestion (Not those bald cats, please) :)

1. one of these, I believe

Cause, you know, if you have one of these in your house I doubt you'd be worrying about your allergies. :D

2. The bald ones are best but
a really short haired cat would be better than a long haired one. A Siamese or Siamese mix is a very short haired cat.

12. OH NO.
;ong hairs shed less than short hairs. the worst would be a short haired tabby. its like waalking in a hair cloud. my black long haired mails didn't shed much and were quite fastideous.

If it's saliva or dander you're allergic too, there's no help.

18. What the heck were they?
They each bore a superficial resemblance to a cat.

The one on the arm of the folding chair looks like something I saw on one of the Sci-Fi Channel ads.

7. It isn't the hair that people are allergic to.
It is the dander, even a cat without hair will illicit the undesired immune response. The reason you aren't allergic to your dog is that a poodle's hair is more like human hair than doggie fur. If you're allergic to cats, and you insist on having one, try spraying distilled water around your house and on the kitty to help keep the dander at bay.

13. Dander is little flakes of skin that have died and dropped off the animal
Humans produce the same thing, but I don't think it's called "dander" when humans shed old skin cells.

21. I thought that too, except dictionary.com says
That dandruff is:

dan·druff ( P ) Pronunciation Key (dndrf)
n. A scaly scurf formed on and shed from the scalp, sometimes caused by seborrhea.

While dander is:
dan·der2 ( P ) Pronunciation Key (dndr)
n. Scurf from the coat or feathers of various animals, often of an allergenic nature.

I'm not certain they are the exact equivalent, since us humans shed skin cells from the entire body, not just the skalp.

14. We have five cats
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 07:55 PM by WWW
And the only one that doesn't bother my nose is the Siamese. And to a lesser degree, my mothers' cat, who is part Siamese.

And yes it is the dander and not the hair which people are allergic to.

Izzy snuggles under the covers all night and it doesn't bother me, but the others start to make my nose itch after about five seconds.

And then there is our other cat, Tumona, who is actually allergic to cat hair and has breathing problems because of it.

spelling error, and yes I used spellcheck!

17. How Disgusting!
Why don't they tinker with their own biology and make allergy-free HUMANs instead of kitty-eugenics?!?

16. It really depends on how allergic you are.
Most people who are only somewhat cat allergic and live with one or two cats in the house. I'm one of those. I have two cats and I'm just fine with them. But I had to stop volunteering at a cat shelter because after fifteen minutes in the cat room my nose was running freely and I was sneezing constantly.

If your get asthma-like symptoms around cats you should not consider having one at all.

I don't know if the allergy shots that help with things like ragweed are at all useful in reducing cat allergies.
