Some of the stuff I get is totally inedible. I've never been a big fan of spam. Espeically if it's of the pornographic variety, no matter how it gets dressed up! :-)
I delete, delete and delete. Recently I discovered that my ISP has spam filters though. I promptly signed up and only get abou 10 a day now. Made a huge difference!

6. Blackhole the sending ISP, then delete. |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-08-03 10:21 AM by Sinistrous
Outlook Express has a neat option under "tools" that deletes messages from your server before they even get to your machine.
I right click the spam to get "Properties", then I copy the originating ISP from the message data, and then paste it to my "blackhole" list in "tools mail"
Works like a charm.

8. It sends them straight to your deleted items folder |
|
I used to do the same thing. Then I started mssing emails. I found out that I had so many "blocked" email addresses that sometimes as they were being transferred to "deleted" it was knocking out other mail. So they are on your machine, just unopened in deleted items. Make sure you are emptying your "deleted items" folder.

These never even make it to my machine. What you say is true for "Outlook", but "Outlook Express" has the facility as I described.
I have seen messages listed when I checked mail using my browser to check my ISP webmail, then opened OE and gotten "No New Messages". Ah, the power!

10. I've found these all to be "whack a mole" solutions. |
|
Not worth the trouble.
I have two folders. Only mail from trusted domains, my company, or my family goes into the inbox. Everything else goes into a folder called "spam". The spam folder gets checked maybe once every couple of days just in case somebody's legit message might have gotten sent in there by mistake, in which case, I expand my one rule to include that person's domain. This way, you find yourself tinkering WAY less with your rules wizard.
Outlook Express doesn't do this very well. I think Microsoft does this on purpose. Full Outlook is even worse. I use Mozilla's mail client instead; it's message rules manager is WAY more user-friendly, IMHO. One you do the red dinosaur, you never go back to M$FT.

11. If I don't recognize who it's from....... |
|
....... I delete without opening. Some crafty spammers have something built in to the E-Mail that sends a mesage back to them to tell them you are a legitimate recipient. Then they say "we have a live one". That only generates more spam. Not only from the original spammer but they also sell your address to other bulk mailers. And the beat goes on.......
