How can you dispose of the little 1-lb propane tanks from camping? |
|
You know--the little ones for lanterns, camp cookstoves, etc. I don't think I should just throw them in the trash, so what do I do with them?

2. Give a call to your Fire Department. |

I used to work for environmental services companies that used to do HHHWCDs (HouseHold Hazardous Waste Collection Days). We used to see alot of those, as well as those "Benzomatic" type propane torch cylinders. Sometimes the town would authorize that we take them. Sometimes they wouldn't, in which case the owner was usually stuck with them. These tanks are often a problem since they are made of thicker metal and are usually under higher pressure than an aerosol type spray can. The usual reason was that the waste contractor that ran the collection usually charged a pretty steep price to get rid of these tanks and for that reason the towns would not authorize the drop off of those little tanks.
First- call your local fire department and try to talk to the the chief or someone of authority. Just tell them what you have and if they know of a responsible way to dispose or reclaim it. They may be able to direct you to an outfit that can take it, albeit for a fee usually.
If the fire department can't help you, try to talk to someone in the town hall and see if the town is going to be conducting a HHHWCD sometime in the coming year. If they are they may be able to take it when the collection comes around.
If all else fails try giving a few calls to propane suppliers, industrial gas suppliers or even a hardware store that stocks the same thing. Maybe they can help you out.
Wish I had a better answer for you. Good Luck!
