Speaking of time travel, what's your favorite time travel story? |
|
Books or movies.
For movies, I think I'd pick 12 Monkeys.
For books, I really loved Time and Again by Jack Finney. The way he used old photos of NYC throughout the book was fun.

12 Monkeys--great. Time and Again--highly enjoyable. But when I'm in the mood for a little cheese, I have to go with Somewhere in Time. Ahhhh cheeeeeessse! Time After Time--H.G. Welles/Jack the Ripper saga comes in a close second.

2. The one that comes to mind is... |
|
...Classic Trek's "All Our Yesterdays," and the novels it inspired, "Yesterday's Son" and its sequel, which I believe was called "Time for Yesterday." In general, Star Trek in all its incarnations had some pretty good time travel tales.

"All Our Yesterdays" is definitely a favorite. I love the way Kirk explaines Spocks ears by turning him into a Chinese man who had a "rice picker accident."

32. Trek TOS had the best time travel stories. E.g. "Assignment: Earth" |
|
It knew when to take itself seriously and when to crack a joke.
Later incarnations camp it up and/or invent 50,000 new ways to time travel... though cause-of-time-travel-reason-number-28005 as seen in "Little Green Men" aside, "Little Green Men" is actually quite good.

Jack Finney has actually thought through some of the problems that a modern person would have in adjusting to the culture of the nineteenth century and the ways he would find it attractive, although he seems to gloss over some of the disadvantages of those days.
And the ending...! It may take you a second or two to realize what has happened.

And I love NYC and always loved the Dakota which is a neat old building. New York in general has some really cool old architecture and the way Finney makes the city a character in the story is really wonderful.
I love the ending and you're right - you kind of think, "Hey, what just happened?"

12 Monkeys is a very cool movie (IMO). Complex and imaginative. If you like time travel stories, you should check it out (Terry Gilliam directed it and did a great job).

12. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure |
|
Bill: How'd it go? Ted: Bad. Our historical figures are all locked up and my dad won't let them out. Bill: Can we get your dad's keys? Ted: Could steal them but he lost them two days ago. Bill: If only we could go back in time to when he had them and steal them then. Ted: Well, why can't we? Bill: Cause we don't got time. Ted: We could do it after the report. Bill: Ted, good thinking dude. After the report we'll time travel back to two days ago, steal your dad's keys, and leave them here. Ted: Where? Bill: I don't know. How about behind that sign? That way when we get here now, they'll be waiting for us. (bends down and picks up the keys) See? Ted: Whoa! Yeah! So after the report we can't forget to do this, or else it won't happen. But it did happen! Hey, it was me who stole my dad's keys! Bill: Exactly, Ted. Come on. (goes over to the car) Mom? Missy: Yes? Bill: Can you please bring the car around back? Missy: Sure. Bill: (stands up) Come on, Ted. We've got some historical figures to rescue.

I especially liked the key scene. I all but had an epiphany with that scene because it explained all I needed to know about time travel; "It can happen today because tomorrow we'll correct it yesterday". Time is circular with a time machine and the possibilities are infinite.

Ender's Game is crap, too.
Ender's a pacifist so he beats the living sh*t out of people. Right.
It appeals to that sad part of us that wants to "justify" violence. The - "I'm not REALLY violent - but but but - he MADE me do it!" kind of thinking.
The man is a complete whackjob.

30. People--Robert A Heinlein wrote the definitive time travel stories-- |
|
--like he did every other SF topic...story: "--All You Zombies"; novellette: "By His Bootstraps", which still says everything there is to be said about the subject, though it was written in 1941; novel: "The Door Into Summer", but "Time Enough For Love" also bears reading in this regard, though time travel is only one of its themes... You're welcome.

57. The Saga of the Pliocene Exile by Julian May |
|
In a distant future, the death penalty has been replaced with exile via a one way time travel trip to the Pliocene era of Earths distant past. The story follows a large group of revolutionaries sent there who, once arriving, discover that they are by no means alone. It so happens that there is a group of technically advanced aliens inhabiting the area, aliens who have crashed landed there and set up their own society in which the human exiles find themselves enslaved.
For any of you aficionados of "fps" or "rpg" style video games, I submit that this series, printed in the early '80s would make a fantastic source for a video game. (Any programmers out there seeing this?????)
