Damn you mediocre corporate programmers! |
|
Damn you and your badly made software, your non-normalized databases, your crappy data storage methodologies, your inscrutable logic!
Damn you to hell! Because of you every year I find myself stuck trying to figure out how to migrate your crappy data late into the night every new years season.
Arg. This is not what I want to be doing at 7pm.

1. It's not all our fault |
|
Okay, it's mostly our fault. Most of us are really only code grinders. ;)

3. I swear, half the databases I see look like they were designed by Dilbert's boss. |

Is there such a thing as the -1th degree of normalization? Because I think I'm looking at it right now.

4. HAHA, i know what you mean, I used to go through the same thing |
|
still do to an extent, I'm currently developing web apps for a company that had no database and ran everything off cgi scripts made in 97. Talk about my own personal hell.

5. One would think that people smart enough to write code would be smart enough |
|
to, you know, do it smartly.
Sadly, it is the rare truth.
Like all the jackoffs who keep all their data files, no matter what for, in the same directory and they never name files with sensible names. Then, half a year later, because they called their excel file "file1297", and they can't remember what program they made it in to begin with ("I think it had boxes or colors or maybe lines or something and it had a cute button at the top with a circle that reminded me of David Schwimmer") they can't find their expense sheets for the first half of the year, and have to click on every one of the 3800 files they have in "my documents". Or even worse (and I've encountered this) they don't even know what folder they saved it in ("I dont' know - I just told it to 'save'" and then I say "Well, there's nothing in your 'My Documents' folder, where do you think you put it?" and then they say "I think it's on the computer").

6. I'm looking at about 40000 pdfs labeled like this: 'pdf132112312123' |
|
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 07:55 PM by mainegreen
What the hell am I supposed to do with 40000 pdfs labeled only with a number, all conveniently stored in a table along with docs, txt files, power point presentations and the occasional NULL document?
Hell, an FDF or something more extractable might be handy. Or even better, a freaking reference table with nice information like what exactly is *stored* in that damned pdf, as each one is a totally different form.

9. Sounds like where I work |
|
I'm in production out on the factory floor and needed to find a MSDS for a chemical and was told it's stored on the H Drive now. Took me about 20 minutes to find the right folder and once I opened that up I just gave up. There were hundreds and hundreds of PDF's labeled like yours. I opened up a couple to see if maybe they were scanned and inputted alphabetically figured I might be able to find it if they were but no luck they were all random. So much for the paperless office making things easier. Used to be able to go to a file cabinet and find them in under 5 minutes. We had copies filed by trade name, generic name and manufacturer. Not anymore just random numbers in the computer.
