Grades are out(my first zero) |
|
I hated the class anyways(American Political Thought), the teacher seemingly judged weather or not we read our assignments based on weather or not we had questions about what we read. Only twice did he base our participation on our ability to answer questions on what we read. Granted most of the time I did just skim through what was assigned but as I mentioned before he rarely based weather we read our stuff or not by weather we could recall certain points in the readings.
To make matters worse it was a "writing intensive corse"(both something I compleatly suck at, and something required to graduate with my selected major). On the midterm he never gave a minimum length neither when he assigned it, nore when he handed our papers back and allowed us to rewrite them(standard thing not because of our grades), all he said was make it longer, so I lengthened it as much as I can and I got it back with no grade on it(even though on the first one he specifically said "I will grade what you turn in"),and its not as if I BS'd my way through either midterm or final its just hard to write at length about the stuff he wanted us to write about.
Frankly I'm just annoyed that he didn't even give me a decimal of a grade but a straght zero(0.0), as if I was never in class.

1. you got itt back with no grade on it? |
|
the first thing i would do is make sure he got it and that it wasn't stuck between some other papers and handed back without him ever seeing it
of course he gave you a zero if he thinks you never handed in the assignment
if he did see it, then he at least has to look you in the eye and explain why the paper deserves a zero
then you can escalate if you still think you deserve a better score
i wouldn't just sit by and let this go by since you have no reason to believe he even read the paper
it has been a few years but any student who cared enough to dispute a grade w. me and offered a decent reason probably got a few points and mistakes are often made -- my ex received a D that would have kept him out of grad school, he confronted the professor (very politely), turned out the prof had calculated the grade wrongly, the new grade, still "low" for that course -- a C -- meant my ex was admitted into grad school w. full fellowship
don't take something lying down with NO explanation, the prof himself might not mean to harm you so badly, he could have made a mistake or he could think you dis-respected him so much by not handing in the paper that he is left with no choice
approach him politely and see if you can fix this, OFTEN you can

3. Did you get a 0 on both the midterm and the final? I think you |
|
should discuss with your prof why you deserve a grade. Surely you can put an argument together.
I'm go to a Community College and I'm normally assigned a minimum of 5 pages on both midterms and finals. How long was your paper?

4. Maybe the weather affected whether he would grade the course... |
|
based on neither participation nor comprehension but on spelling and grammar.

8. I understand you reaction but |
|
I have to tell you that after reading your post my first reaction was that if there is a college anywhere willing to give you a degree we are in worse shape than I thought. Your writing skills make me wonder how on earth you got out of high school.
With all due respect, I don't think the professor is your problem.

10. dont rush to assumptions |
|
just because my grammer may be less then perfect on message boards dosn't mean i put the same effort into my actual assignments, this is because i assume people arn't such pricks as to judge me by the way i write on message boards this aint exactly a professional setting now is it?

11. I think you're being rather a dick to your professor |
|
It's difficult to tell the entire situation, since all we have are two paragraphs from you, and I don't know you at all - but, according to those two paragraphs, you have admitted that you did not read things enough to discuss them (only enough to maybe answer some direct questions, but that is NOWHERE near actually doing the reading)... you complained that your paper wasn't graded, but then in another post admitted that the professor wrote "that's all you added?" to it, which, to me, IS grading the paper - it's saying, "This isn't enough to get a grade beyond incomplete or not handed in".
Now, you did not say what grades you got on the midterm and the final tests - I can't imagine that you got zero on them. If you did, then you either have absolutely no head for that subject and need to just say "Well, self, clearly this is not my thing". Or more likely, your professor is too much of a hard ass on grading. But, since I'm assuming you did not get zeroes on the tests, that's a moot point.
So then we have the question: why the zero for the final grade? Sounds to me (though you really need to speak to the professor about this) that the zero represents that your professor believes you didn't complete the basic minimum (doing the readings, writing complete papers) to even be considered for a grade.
You do need to talk to the professor about it.
And I do suggest that you take a class in English, or find a tutor who can help you use language better.

7. You need to talk to this professor |
|
and you need to be more than annoyed - scared to death would be more like it. Do you have any idea what a 0 does to a grade point average? It is nearly impossible to recover from a grade like that. Get on your knees and beg. Then the next time you take a class, do the work and stop whining. You are paying for the class. Expect more of yourself. A retired teacher.
