Anybody remember the movie "Shirley Valentine"?
It came out about 1990. It's the story of a British housewife who has had it with her husband who doesn't appreciate her and decides to take a vacation. She leaves behind a note that says "Gone to Greece. Back in two weeks." At the end, her husband finds her and asks her to return, but the film stops there, leaving you to wonder what she decided to do.

A friend of mine took an unscientific poll as to whether she stayed in Greece or went home. She found that most women answered "She stayed in Greece," and most men answered, "She went home."

I was one of the few male exceptions. My answer was, "Of course she stayed in Greece. She'd found a new life for herself and her self-respect. Why would she have gone back with that jerk."

What do you think? Did she stay in Greece or go back to England?

1. Boat is boat, and fuck is fuck
What a fun quote.

I had the impression that she returned home, but under her terms.

2. I was always like that about "Before Sunrise"
Although they made "Before Sunset" a few years ago to answer that question

5. My most favorite feel-good movie ever!!!
I've been waiting impatiently for it to come out on DVD here in the States so I can add it to my extensive library. I don't want to know Shirley's final decision. I loved the ending of uncertainty - just as life is. Whatever Shirley decided - she is one damned fine woman!!

7. Mmmm...Tom Conti
Before he got all cranky and harumphy...

Lessee...husband who takes his wife for granted...or Tom Conti in the sun and surf...hmmmmm...

Actually, I like to think that if she didn't stay in Greece, Shirley went to an entirely different place--by herself--and flourished in yet a new life, dependent on no one at all.

8. Pauline Collins was great on the TV series "Upstairs, Downstairs."
She was good in "Shirley Valentine" but the movie was a big step down for her after "U.D." in my opinion. (I think she stayed in Greece.)

10. This is one of the best movies ever.
In the very last scene her husband joins her and while it's unclear I think they stay.

12. 'I no want to make fuck with you'
:D hahah one of my favorite movies.

I'm not sure if they stayed or went home, but either way they were going to live their lives to the fullest - that was the lesson to be learned and that can be done anywhere.
