Am I the only shop rat?
Edited on Wed Jan-03-07 10:06 PM by Ptah

We know how to measure, when, where and to cut material.

We have had our fill of engineers/designers that couldn't find a t-sqaure, or know how to check it's accuracy.

We have had out fill of bosses that want it now, but won't spend the necessary money to provide tools, supplies or equipment to do the job.

We know we can fabricate anything, anytime, with a sharp tool, and a clear design.

We have at sometime, dried our coffee cup with the air hose.

Our motto is: Same shit, different engineer.

2. I have a crush on a shop rat.
Does that count for anything? (I work at a mfg plant that makes diesel engines.)

17. Yeah, patch panels for my rusty Impala...
Acetyline (sp) torch and a break, weld and patch, then slap on the filler.

Restored a 1965 Impala SS...

11. Former shop rat
15 years as a cabinet maker, 7 years running my own shop.
Didn't deal with engineers but had my share of interior designers to deal with

19. Yep
The one good thing was that they did the sales and saved me from being out of the shop. As far as knowing what was feasible I had one or two that were good the rest forget about it.

12. I made a plexiglas coin bank in the shape of a pair of lips, once.
ALSO, my mousetrap car won the shop class race (for distance, not speed). We had a unit in which I made a coin purse, and I believe we did something involving "pop rivets".

21. Ha! you need to story-up with hubby, he worked as a start up engineer...
in the oil pipeline industry and has many such stories about ivory tower engineers; once mentioned a 24" valve that was installed 20' off the ground with no catwalk to get up to it until he had one put in x( thought it should be mandatory that all CAD draftsmen and engineers spend time on the ground before they take that elevator to the upper floors
