Florida hit Ohio State Big Time |
|
The sooners and the buckeyes need to get the weight/blubber off. Both teams waddled into the stadium.
Crushing your opponents is no longer "in".

1. you do a disservice to your team's great victory |
|
with that kind of cheap shot against Oklahoma. And I don't see much cause for comparison between the two games--if the Sooners weren't in shape, they wouldn't have been able to steadily come back from an 18 point deficit in the second half.

3. I do not wish to demean the heavier teams |
|
But these players are a bit much. They demean themselves. Weight is not great.

4. I don't think Oklahoma is a very heavy team |
|
They've got a very effective strength and conditioning coach, and Bob Stoops has refused to start top-notch talent because they simply weren't in shape. A handful of highly-touted offensive and defensive linemen, especially, have wound up transferring because they couldn't crack the starting lineup at the weight they were at. I certainly don't think blubber or waddling was the Sooner's problem last Monday.

As one coach put it - fast guys will get tired and slow down, but big guys will never get any smaller. I remember before one superbowl, Washington vs. Buffalo when they announced the starting line-up that Buffalo guys were over 50 pounds lighter than the Washington guys. And it showed in the final score as they lost by about 50 points.

5. then again, the Denver Broncos won two straight super bowls with the smallest offensive line |
|
in the league, by far, averaging less than 300 pounds.

8. apparent;y they had a great running scheme |
|
Plus it helps when the quarterback is playing his old coach and can read the defense like a book. Their key defensive player against the Packers though, Atwater, was not a huge guy though. But were 300 pounders that common ten years ago? I cannot find stats on the size of the 1991 Redskins.

9. I think 300 was probably close to average then |
|
for an O-lineman, anyway ... I think that with the success Denver had running the ball in the late 90s is when the trend towards size on the lines started to slow down, because Denver had such great success running the ball, and their scheme relied on small, quick offensive linemen who could pull and block on the move.
Atwater wasn't big overall, but at 215-20 he was good sized for a safety--of course, he hit like a linebacker :)
I can't find stats for the '91 redskins either, but I do remember them tossing the bills around the field :)

6. I think OSU's problem was their arrogancy weight. |
|
they came in thinking their shit didnt stink and they were very much shown that it does.

10. Ohio State hadn't played in 50 days. No one wants to admit it, |
|
but that's about 30 days too much time off. They looked fat and slow before they took the field.

7. In my humble football opinion... |
|
it depends on the type of game.
If its a shootout, the lighter, supposedly fitter team has the advantage.
For dragout low scoring adventures, fat boys grinding it out at the end have the upper hand.
For both occasions, OU still stinks. Hook'em Horns.

11. Look for the Big Ten to change policy. |
|
I expect to see the season extended into December. With the weather we have now, we could play bowl games in Ohio.

12. There were some big Gators on the line too. |
|
The Gators just outplayed, outhustled, outclassed, outcoached, and overwhelmed OSU. The Buckeyes never knew what hit them.
By the way, Troy, how did that turf taste last night?
