It's comparing apples to oranges. Kelly was a more physical dancer, Astaire was more grace. But Kelly was my favorite.

For some reason, I've always kind of disliked Gene Kelly. And Fred got to dance with Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face, one of my favorite movie musicals! :-)

I think it's ironic that although Fred Astaire is the one best-known for his artistry and elegance, it was Gene who was ballet-trained.
Also, Gene - unlike Fred - didn't marry a Ku Klux Klan member. FWIW, I'm positive Fred did not share Robyn's views and to be fair, I don't know if maybe she changed her mind about the organization.
Although no one looked better than Fred Astaire in a top hat and tux squring women on the dance floor, I kind of prefer Gene's more masculine take on dance.

11. Gene could do everything Fred did backwards and in high heels. |
|
And no one even asked him to. He just did it.

No doubt about it.....
I watched that's dancing' and he was narrating a scene about Michael Jackson and how he said he was right up there with the other greats...
It must have broken his heart to have to say that Mr. two moves and a crotch grab was even in the same movie as Astair and Kelly...

Gene always seemed a little more athletic than Fred but I think that isn't true but only a mere difference in their build and style of dance.

Fred Astaire in my book. But it's a style preference, not a talent thing.

Gene was a nice guy, but I always get the feeling he's unnecessarily trying to prove his masculinity. Also, he was chunkier than Fred.
Gene's wife, Betsy Blair, was a lefty who was blacklisted. Gene was a lefty, too, but not as vocal as she, and somehow survived. Maybe because he was one of MGM's most valuable properties.

Watching Fred Astaire, I recognize and am impressed by his talent, the same way I might recognize and be impressed by anybody who is very good at something that I'm not really into.
But watching Gene Kelly, I forget that I'm not really that interested in dancing.

not only was he a great dancer but his singing inspired guys like Cole Porter and Irving Berlin to write songs specifically for him. He has influenced nearly every popular singer since the 1920's. Frank Sinatra is a prime example. He was a killer drummer too.

27. Their styles were so completely different; |
|
a compare/contrast is impossible. Both were masters, but Astaire was a classic, salon dancer; Kelly a modern, total body interpretive dancer -- European and American if you will. Those pictures say it all.
Both were a joy to watch.
