Poll question: Should I make TeenMidlo pay for her insurance? |
|
It's not that much, because one of our cars is a company car, but I want the money dammit.

1. It's what my parents required of us when we were teenagers |
|
and not one of us is emotionally scarred by it. In fact, we're all quite responsible, reasonably successful adults able to deal with our finances and embued with a work ethic.

2. That's what I am thinking, too. |
|
She has it pretty soft so far. She's really busy with school and activities, but a lot of her friends have jobs for spending money. Heck, she could babysit and earn the money for the insurance.
I want her to get an idea just how far minimum wage goes :eyes: before she goes off to college in a year and a half.

3. Well then, you don't need a poll. |
|
You know what to do. ;-)
I went to college with some kids who had never paid for anything on their own and it showed. They had cars paid for by their parents, credit cards paid for by their parents, etc. No wonder that the first year after college, when many of us went to big cities and shared apartments with multiple roommates these same kids had no clue that rent didn't include the cost of electricity or telephones. I even knew one kid who was surprised that he had to pay income tax on his small wage.

11. Holy crap, is TeenMidlo my sister? |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 05:50 PM by LeftyMom
For your sake I hope not. She's 22, makes $15/hr and still doesn't pay her own car insurance. Oh, and Dad got her a Mercedes. :eyes:
But it's okay, 'cause sometimes she buys her own gas. It takes premium and it's got a V8. :grr:
Edit: so what I'm saying is nip the entitlement in the bud. Even if you split the cost with her, make sure she gets used to the idea that she has to pay bills.

10. When my little one gets old enough to drive |
|
I'm going to make a deal with him. We'll pay his insurance and other expenses, but with a few conditions.
1. He keeps good grades all 4 years of high school, and commits to go to college. 2. He keeps up with his chores at home. 3. He particpates in community service volunteer work (for two reasons--it helps others, and it helps on college applications) 4. He drives responsibly at all times, and does not EVER even *consider* driving while consuming alcohol.
So long as he sticks to those rules, we'll gladly pay his expenses. Otherwise--he'll be getting a job. :)

14. You should also choose her first car for her. |
|
My daughter takes drivers ed this coming summer and we have already discussed these issues. Her first car is going to be a late 70's gas guzzler. She was not impressed by this at first but dad rules. I took her to a demolition derby and showed her how indestructible they are. Where she lives the ditches are very deep (some over 6') Bonus points she will hardly have the gas money to drive it around much. I feel very clever and somewhat evil.
