Some fantastic fun for us old folks
http://www.otr.net

This site has thousands of old radio shows from the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Shows such as Jack Benny, The Lone Ranger, Fibber McGee and Molly, Abbot and Costello, Bob Hope, and more. They even have some vintage sports broadcasts such as Yankees vs Red Sox baseball games and Army vs Notre Football games. It's all free.

Reminds of being a kid in the 1950's when we didn't have a television. Our only entertainment up until about 1959 was a couple of old Zenith tube-type radios.

4. Oh, thanks for this link. The 40s and 50s found me glued to the radio
Listening to all the shows you mentioned, plus serials like The Cisco Kid (always ended with "Oh, Cisco, Oh, Pancho!"), I Love a Mystery (Jack, Doc and Reggie!), Mr. Keene: Tracer of Lost Persons, Sam Spade, The Shadow...the list goes on...oh, god, what memories! I'll always be grateful for those escapes from the rather grim reality of my childhood. I will bookmark this site and get ready for some sentimental journeys!

Blessings!

13. I've been a fan for weeks -- Johnny Dollar was obviously a favorite
of Garrison Keillor's. Some really fine drama writing in those old shows. I remember struggling through the week to get from one Inner Sanctum episode to the next......(also class of '56).

21. Ah, yes--Inner Sanctum!
I can hear the creaking door now--wasn't that the one?

Last summer I attended my class of '56 50th reunion. Kept wondering who all those elderly folks were...until I looked in the mirror and realized I was one of 'em. Ha! We weren't too old to Rock Around the Clock, though. Well, at least listen to Bill Hailey and his Comets!

I never thought the 50s were all that great--but the radio shows and the tunes sure do make me smile! And I also love GK's Guy Noir shticks. More nostalgia!

Blessings, fellow Class o'56er!

23. "Coro" earrings weighed a half-pound each and made your earlobes hurt,
the adults in town thought civilization was going to come to naught because the "upper-class" boys started wearing Levis instead of nice trousers; crinkly nylon fabric was popular for clothes (I looked like a pink marshmallow but felt like I was wearing a garbage bag); The My Fair Lady music was inescapable, I remember sitting on the bandstand in the vacant lot trying to slap mosquitos while tootling the first clarinet part of "I'm Getting Married In The Morning" and trying to look glamorous in my fluffy pink sauna dress and Inquisition Coro earrings.

Garter bumps. Girdles. And I thought Elvis was really low-class and wouldn't last long, and Ricky Nelson was really handsome and would be a huge star forever.

And I hated Doris Day Rock Hudson movies then and after two divorces I hate them more. And I couldn't get over James Dean dying. And "Unchained Melody" being on the radio all the time didn't help.

I'm a lot happier as an independent, politically active old broad than I was as a teenager, I tell ya!!!

There's probably enough there to keep my TV off until my satellite dish is resurrected at the end of the month.

And yes, Stan Freberg was a GOD.

14. Younger folks too.
That stuff is all before my time but I think I'll get a lot of enjoyment out of it, especially since I've never hear any of it before.

I just listened to an "Inner Sanctum". :hide:

15. Thanks so much - many terrific programs.
Two that I recall but were not listed were "The Shadow" and "Yukon King" (Dog of the Frozen North!)
However, the site says they're adding hundreds of more shows, so hopefully they will show up eventually. I can recall sitting around a big old console radio with my family to listen to so many of these shows - sadly I'm the only one left. But I will forward this link to my friends/classmates and they will love it too.

25. "Take an Indian to Lunch, This Week
Show him we're a regular Bunch, this Week.

Let him share our Quaker Oats,

Stan Freeberg is a GOD, and I was lucky enough to meet him once at the Friars Club, a breakfast party there, I told him that I was listening to him when I was a FETUS, and he laughed his ass off :)

Thanks, National treasures here!

27. We always did have a TV
in one form or another when I was a kid (born in 58.) But my dad found tapes of these programs when I was growing up and we would all huddle around and listen to them. I always enjoyed those evenings.
