If you use the "sarcasm" smiley, or just claim that you're joking, |
|
does that excuse anything you write? Sometimes it makes sense to say something inflammatory in response to something, but othertimes it seems that people use it as an afterthought to try to backpaddle out of an unpopular statement they make.
I'd give you a case in point, but I think that's against the rules. :)
You all suck by the way. :sarcasm:
(I AM just joking with that last sentence. I think you all rock. :sarcasm:, wait, I mean :bounce:)

4. It's not an excuse. It's an explanation. |
|
I don't think it "excuses" anything, so much as it gives context to what was written.
For instance:
GO BUSH! HE'S HUGH - A REAL NOBEL JESTER!!! ---> translation: I'm an idiot, please ban me.
versus.
GO BUSH! HE'S HUGH - A REAL NOBEL JESTER!!! :sarcasm: or :patriot: ---> translation: I'm trying to make a joke. ha ha.

5. For some it appears to be an excuse |

after they make some objectionable comment in a way that appears to be completely serious, and then people object to it, and then they respond by saying "I was just joking. I guess I should have used the sarcasm smiley."

6. No. It doesn't necessarily excuse what you say. |
|
And many times it doesn't work at all.

7. we all know people use it as a cover now. |
|
not everyone of course -- but certainly some use it to cover lunacy, bigotry, misogony, homophobia, etc.
