Come spring, I'll lose my beautiful dogwood tree! What should I replace it with?
My lovely dogwood, so faithfully producing those wonderful pink blossoms every May, will have to come down in the spring. It has been the "anchor" on the corner of my house and I want something there immediately to take its place. Not a little, little tree.

What can I get? Is there another (not so disease prone) blossoming tree that will have those lovely pink buds?

I hate losing this great tree...

6. How about some kind of magnolia or another dogwood?
magnolia liliiflora
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulan_magnolia

Very beautiful if you have the room. A bit messy, but spectacular.

magnolia stellata
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_magnolia

Delicate and stunning. Not nearly as big for a magnolia.

cornus flordia (flowering dogwood)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornus_florida

I have the pink version of this (cornus florida rubra) in my yard, and the blooms are very long lasting. I've never pruned it and the shape is fantastic.

cornus kousa (kousa dogwood)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornus_kousa

I have this near my cornus florida. Nice upright shape. I love the berries that come in the late summer/fall.

Most importlantly, have fun researching! A great book to look at is Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs. Loads of pictures, and great snooty commentary. Here it is at Amazon.

7. I would suggest an Eastern redbud.

They are short lived (~10yrs) but, just lovely, with pink/lavender colored blooms up and down all of the branches.

10. Seconded; and our redbud in the yard lasted at least 15 if not 20.
until the whole house was plowed under to make room for a freeway.
Blehtch.

12. How will it do in New England?
I am in CT. It has to be able to withstand a CT winter.

11. Sounds so great! I don't want to miss the wonderful pink light that
the afternoon sun on the pink dogwood tree for 2 weeks every year throws on my bedroom in the afternoon!

It is such a beautiful feeling in that room! This sounds like a good replacement.

Can I get one that is not little? I want one that is a little farther grown, also to fill the space at the corner of my landscaped area in front.

8. Maybe a cherry tree?
Lovely blossoms, and sometimes fruit.

Costco is selling trees right now, but you can probably do better at a local greenhouse.
