2. No glorified karaoke here, thank you.
I prefer my musicians to play instruments and bring the rawk, which no Mike Bolton or Celine Dion wannabe has the capability of doing.

6. Without Fox News, American Idol would be why I want Rupert Murdoch's head on a pike.
As thrilled as I am to see a months-long karaoke contest to determine which rural city has the most unemployed people, I still have to think that when the apes enslave human beings, they'll see American Idol as a turning point in their favor.

And please, can people please quit treating the contest losers like they're celebrities?! Yes, EVERY PERSON WHO WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT "DREAMGIRLS," I am talking to you!!! Wow, she won an award for acting like a singer? That's just crazy, 'cos if I remember correctly, she first made her big break on a TV show acting like a singer!!! What are the odds?

Sorry, I have to watch news all day at work, including 3 hours of Fox affiliate shows, so I get my fill of this shit. Oh yeah, and I hate that they have packages about American Idol on their "news" programs.

It's just me, a bottle of Southern Comfort, and American Idol on television. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration. And ginbarn is there to make sure I don't overdo it.

the war might be over by now.

27. I imagine it's hard not to take it personally when you DID say
that you "hate everyone" who watches it.

What makes American Idol any worse than the dozens and dozens of other shows Americans are glued to every week? Why do you single out American Idol as the "the show" that takes attention away from dying people? Do you suppose it's possible that someone could be an American Idol fan and still be an active force for political causes?

I've only watched three or four complete episodes since its inception, so don't suggest I might be taking this "personally." I'm just baffled as to why you focus so much anger and hatred on this one particular show and its fans. Do you really think that if this show didn't exist, this mess of a war would be any different?

28. Actually...
...I gave up on that show a long time ago. The drinking game was only during the Clay Aiken/Ruben Studdard era. After that, I began to lose interest. Too many matters of more important bearing on the nation, y'know.

Am I forgiven?

36. Gosh, you can't pay attention to more than one thing at a time?
That's sad.

So you pay no attention to global warming because it will take your attention away from people dying in Iraq? Or poverty? Or anything else?

Sorry, silly argument.

That said, I just love comments from posters (not the OP) who act like the public can't hold more than one thought in their head and seem to feel as though if you watch AI you're incapable of comprehending anything else in the world.

and I don't think even Simon likes Simon. But I don't know how much of that is heartfelt invective vs scripted invective. I don't know who he is, outside of that show.

21. It seems like some people here on DU get very emotional over this show
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 06:01 PM by WI_DEM
a talent show on TV is nothing new--back in the early days of the medium they had Major Bowles and Arthur Godfrey introduced amateur talent. I can take it or leave it. I know lots of people who love it and enjoy it and they are very liberal too.

24. American Idol is the Olive Garden of music
I feel embarrassed for those who religiously watch it
is there no music store in their town or something? I seriously look down on anyone who loves this sophomoric crap. Here's a guide to some needed music education. it's a flawed list for sure but a big step in the right direction:

Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 07:54 PM by mvd
Bo Bice, Nadia from a couple seasons ago, Kelly Clarkson, and Katharine McPhee. Plus, I enjoy the chemistry between the judges, and the competition is fun. I am not as fanatical as some fans, as I only vote a few times at most, don't get into rivalries with fans of other contestants, and don't post on the AI boards all the time. I'm also not going to worry as much about watching all of these early shows.

and found it fun.

Amateur talent contests have a long history in US entertainment - this is just the latest incarnation.

I'm looking forward to tonight - the auditions are the best part.

34. The first few episodes of each season are a laugh riot.
The "audition episodes" where they show all the people who tried out for it but were horrible, are classic TV comedy. So many people are delusional, thinking they have great singing talent, when they actually sound like a cow giving birth. We have gotten many good laughs out of those early episodes. Once they narrow down the contest to the people who can actually sing, it becomes another boring reality show. But those first few nights are a panic.
