7. Sorry, I didn't watch late night tv. |
|
I didn't shift into a "night owl" until I was in my 30s. I never even pulled an all-nighter in college.
I was never into television. Too busy listening to music or reading. Fine, fine. Call me a geek. I can take it.

I was 18 in 1977 and IIRC, SCTV was on tv that year, and it booted SNL to number two.

You are one of my heroes. I know I shouldn't be surprised, because most DUers are innately smart people, but it seems like most people want to spell it Ackroyd.

19. Honestly? That year is pretty much gone. |
|
I have vague recollections of it. There was a lake, and a girl, and a truck. Maybe? And maybe a lot of psychedelic drugs?
At the time I thought the girl was the best thing that had ever happened to me, or maybe that year I spent at the lake and/or following The Dead. But now? All I could tell you about is the truck.
That truck was special. There's just a bond that forms between a man and his first truck that so-called "straight" don't understand.
The lake's dried up and the girl is gone, but I'll remember that truck until the day I die. I have never loved anyone -- mother, daughter, wife -- as much as I loved that truck. The way she smelled when I held my face against her, the way I could talk her through her comically uncooperative periods, the way she reacted to my fingers turning her on, the way she sheltered and comforted me, and the way she loved me and no other. I have mounted on the wall of my closet (perhaps much like a serial killer?) the dashboard of this wonderful, beautiful truck.
More importantly, she was the best friend I've ever had; she will always be first in my heart.

yup...them were the days.
Edited to add: But you couldn't pay me to be 18 again. Nope. I'm much happier where I am now.

45. SNL hadn't started when I was 18 |
|
Monty Python's Flying Circus hadn't migrated to the U.S.
I don't think we had sketch comedy then.
But, y'all talkin' about SCTV, you shoulda seen its predecessor, "Second City Television," before NBC got its hooks into it. Pretty much the same cast (I don't recall the McKenzie brothers being part of it), but it was edgier. Very "experimental."
When NBC started running it, it seemed watered down to me.
