Does your city have two "new rock" stations??? |
|
Mine does. Actually, it's like two and a half. Fargo/Moorhead has Q98 (I'm usally tuned in to this one), 104.7 The Dam (yeah, it's Clear Channel, but they play some good stuff a lot of times, and It's better than the Twin Cities' only station), and another independent college station, KDSU 91.9 (which I listen to a lot, also).
Now I've been in Minneapolis for almost three weeks, and when I was in my car last night listening to Metallica for the 29,342nd straight time, I just HAD to turn off the only rock station in the Twin Cities, 93X, that's owned by Disney and plays CRAPOLA. I had to switch to the pansy-ass alternative station, Drive 105. Thank GOD I'm going back up to Fargo in a week. I can't take anymore shit radio.
Minneapolis/St. Paul has a metro area of 3.1 million people and has one shitty rock station. Fargo/Moorhead has a metro area of 200,000 people and has two really good rock stations (even though one IS Clear Channel), and another awesome independent college station. The reason this is the case is because all the kids in the Twin Cities listen to that dang Hip-Hop (I don't like the new-style Hip-Hop, flame me all you want. I'll take any rap made before 1994, thank you).
It's nice to know I live in a city that caters to my musical tastes on the radio. So speaking of which, does your city have two or more new rock stations???

1. I'm in the Atlanta area and we have quite a few. |
|
I'm not sure how many because I usually listen to Z-93, the classic rock station. I'm loyal to it because I entered a contest on their Web site and won a ski trip to Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 1999. So who knows, maybe I can do it again.

A station Called Jack FM arrived. They play music without a format...they only play good tunes. Example, the might play "Groove is in the HEart" by Deelight one minute. Then "Dirty Deeds" by ACDC the next...they have shut down the one major "new rock" station..the other has changed its format a bit.
Prooving that quality is what people want..not image.

6. Vancouver's second "New Rock" station switched to... |
|
...an all Christmas music format. I'm serious. I wonder if they're planning on doing that all year 'round.

7. Which station was that CanuckAmok? |
|
I lived in Vancouver for 5 years and worked at CKLG, sister to The Fox, and Z95FM.
I usually listen online to Rock 101 in the mornings, love Brother Jake.
I used to listen to him at Q107 in TO, and when he came to Van. it was a pretty happy day!

8. 104.9 "X". They only lasted about 2 years. |
|
99.3 The Fox is "New Rock" now, too.
I hate the "New Rock" format. When I lived in Toronto, there was a truly innovative station there (CFNY) who slowly slid into the "New Rock" dungheap. New Rock is just another micro-managed corporate format. No style whatsoever.

14. Yeah, it reeks of marketing executives, doesn't it? |

Bad music in a bright, shiny wrapper. Corporate radio is abysmal. Gimme a college station anyday, especially one that plays totally off-the-wall stuff.

Traveled back to the Twin Cities last year (lived there until 4 years ago) and was actually impressed with Drive 105. Very nice playlist.
This "New Rock" stuff sucks. Nothing but a bunch of Linkin Park clones. And these stations play frigin' Metallica. If I want Metallica, I'll listen to the hard rock station. At least Drive SOUNDS like a true alternative station, like I grew up with in the 80s and 90s.
We have a "New Rock" station here in Milwaukee (WLUM) and it SUCKS. It's all shoe-gazer grunge metal with rappers. Awful!
93X is a hard rock station. Nothing more, nothing less. And Cities 97 is pretty formulaic, but I wish there was a station like that here. KQ will never go away, and I'm sure their playlist has moved beyond the year 1985 by now.
Ever listen to Radio K (770, 106.5), the U of M station?

there's only 2 rock stations ( one plays classic rock and the other one plays a mix of alternative and metal)....I really miss WNEW, which played a great mix of clasic rock and current rock music........The state of radio in NYC really sucks......

One is clearchannel, which just recently changed to new rock after 23 years of classic rock. Don't listen to them too much because they cancelled the number 1 morning show in Richmond to replace it with some garbage out of DC, they do nothing but giggle all morning long, Elliot in the morning I think its called.....it sucks big hairy ones.
The other is Y101. They used to be independent, but I think they got bought out, but don't think its Clearchannel though.*edit*(just checked, its Cox Radio) They make the claim that they still control their playlists, so I guess they can still be considered independent. Great station, they can get repetitive with the "hot" stuff, but the DJ's are great. Morning drive guy is actually a local dude.
I would love for a station here to start the format HEyHEY mentioned. I'd love a mix like that. Local radio, with the exception of the Y is really driving me towards XM.
