Well, damn, that was a short honeymoon. |
|
After a couple of days setting things up and fiddling with settings on the new MacBook Pro, I actually started TYPING some stuff on it today, and found out that there are six dead keys on the keyboard.
Dammit.
Now it's going to have to go in for a KB replacement.
Dammit. After all the good things I said the other night about Apple's build quality.
Well, shut my mouth, as they say.

that sucks. My first mac was an iBook G4, it took 3 to get one that would even start up. Apple was good to me though, they sent the 3rd one FedEx, and included an extra (free) 512mb of RAM. Now, post your dock here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x6071118

8. Well, this is my first foray into OS(u)X, so I don't have it customized yet. |

2. That truly sucks. After we bought an Apple IIGS many moons ago - |
|
we'd been told that this was the best thing on the planet, and *not* by any Apple people, we bought one. The bastards orphaned the thing within a year. My husband declared that, no matter what, we were *never* buying another Apple product.
I don't know how I am going to get around that one when we go to buy our son an iPod Video..... unless DH has forgotten his declaration. DH doesn't keep up with things and it's been many years, sohe may have forgottem. But, there's no one else that makes an 80 Gig Video mp3 player is there?

I have little-to-no tolerance for electronics in the first place, even less so when 1) they're brand new, or 2) recently returned from the shop.

9. New. If it was used, I'd just buy a KB and replace it. But the KB on these thiings |
|
doesn't pop off as easily as it did on the older PowerBooks.
Some progress right there.

Sucks when things like that happen. How long before it's back up and running?

10. Hey, sweetie, haven't seen you around for a while. Everything OK out there? |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 11:40 PM by Redstone
It'll be about a week before it's back, but that's OK, because I'm still learning the new software so I'm not using it for actual work for another month or so.
No big deal, just irritation. I do hope the Big Weather that's been happining out there didn't clobber you too bad.

You mean someone actually noticed? You're a doll. I haven't been around as much but between the nasty weather, the post-holiday blahs and knitting and crocheting and stitching for the new grandbaby...I've been lurking more than posting lately.
And irritation counts. When you spend that kind of money for something, you have the right to expect it to work. At least you've still got your connection on another computer. I'd worry if you disappeared, y'know.

15. How nice that you'd worry if I disappeared. Let's just go to Arby's, and then you'll |
|
know where I am. I'll be the guy with the Arby's Sauce embedded in my moustache, so you'll be able to track me down fairly easily.

I hope they get the repair turned around and the machine back to you very quickly.
The MBP really is a great machine, but I think the myth of Apple's superior build quality is just that: a myth. They do tend to use better-quality components than most of the PC makers, but I suspect they hurl them together in the same lacksidasical fashion as everyone else.

11. You may indeed be right. My TiBook had to have the display replaced twice. Though it's been |
|
just fine since then. And the 1998 black G3 PowerBook still soldiers on.

12. The major "known issues" with the MBP... |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 11:59 PM by Kutjara
...according to my straw poll of the Apple Support Forum are:
- A nearly ultrasonic whine on some machines that can be very annoying to people with good hearing. - Batteries that swell and burst; this problem necesitated a battery recall. - Fans that fail, making a "card in a bicycle wheel" sound. I had this one. - Random disconnects from wireless networks. I've got this one too - no solution as yet. - Uneven lighting on the LCD panel, usually brighter at the bottom than the top. - Excessive heat, to the point where the strip above the function keys becomes hot enough to burn flesh. - Problems waking from sleep mode - a firmware upgrade fixed this. - You can't use the built in microphone and speakers for VOIP calls, because the mic is too close to the right speaker, causing annoying echo on phonecalls. The only solution is to use a headphone/mic.
Now, the support site is naturally going to be full of complaints rather than praise, but it does seem that Apple machines aren't as perfect as they're supposed to be.

14. I haven't noticed any of them except the heat problem, but I have an Antec |
|
laptop base thing with the two fans, so the heat won't be an issue.
