Hey college students (past and present) - How hard is the SAT

and what would you say is the average SAT score needed to get into a good school?

i've been doing practice tests all day and apparently my ranking is 87% which means i'm doing better than 87% of other people doing to same SAT preps. my thinking is that i'm going to have to bump that up if i want to get into a good school. advice?

1. well you are also doing a lot of extracurriculars and school admissions isnt only dependent on SAT

you may have to take some subject tests though if you want to get into a really good school

also i cant tell you how hard the SATS are since standardized tests come pretty easily to me..

on edit: i went to nyu on a 60% scholarship (not the best but certainly not the worst)

3. The SAT technically isn't difficult

it's tricky. i.e. it doesn't test things a high school student wouldn't know, it's just that the question formats are counterintuitive.

As for the score you need to get into a good school... Figure out what your dream school is, then look at what the average range of SAT scores for admitted students is. You want to be in the middle range. Ideally you will want to aim for being in their top 25% (especially if you want a scholarship)

7. A good, balanced score is good. I can't really say much about the writing section.

I was a senior in high school last year and I did well on the writing and reading parts of the test and not so well on the math. When I applied to Brown early decision I was deferred. I took the test again, raised my math by 30 points, and got in. However, I think that if I had taken more challenging math and science courses in high school and had more extra-curriculars, my score would not have been a problem. So unless you really have nothing else to recommend you, don't worry too much about the SATs.

8. Depends on Major as well as school

As Liontamer said look up the averages for the school you wish to attend. Also see if they seperate by major. The requirments for one part of a University are not always the same as for another paart.
