1. I can't ever take it...
I'm always at work during the time for my area.

Probably just as well.

3. I think I did pretty good...
I definitely knew about 40 out of 50, and I only left five completely blank.

4. The answers I did get were easy.
It's all the ones I skipped that did me in. :)

5. I'm still kicking myself over one I left blank...
I'm sitting on the computer at home, my fiancee's with me, and the question goes "Who did the King of Sweden refer to in 1912 as the world's 'greatest athelete'?"

And I'm yelling, "Dammit! That Native-American guy! Crap!! Craaaapp!!!"

About an hour later, we're in the middle of watching the State of the Union speech when I yell in the middle of it, "JIM THORPE!! FUCK!!!!"

7. That's funny- because Jim Thorpe was a "Millionaire" clue last night.
And yes, I skipped that one as well.

Jim Thorpe to King of Sweden after receiving medal. Best sports quote ever.

14. No, because I hadn't heard about it.
Where do you go to take it? Sorry to hear you bombed it. I've heard the application test is hard, and that the questions are harder than the ones they ask on the show.

15. Go to jeopardy.com to register.
They should be testing again tonight and tomorrow night for the different time zones.

16. Thanks. Registering now.
I tried typing in Jeopardy.com before I asked, but it wouldn't come up. It's because I transposed the o and the a. Yeah, I'm going to do real well on the test :silly:

18. Yes.
You need to arrive 15 minutes before test time. Also, you have 15 seconds per question.

The deadline was the 8th; sorry you didn't see my thread about it at the time: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=6031942
Simplest thing is to get on their email list and they'll send the head's up for the next one. Unfortunately, they only seem to do the thing about once a year. Also if you fail, it doesn't seem like you can take it again, which seems a little stringent.

Here's how it went: There are 50 questions. It's simple question and answer format; you type in your reply. (In other words, responses aren't in the form of a question.) While spelling doesn't count, obviously it's easier to tell that you actually know the right answer if it's spelled correctly. You get 15 seconds per question; while you can skip a question, you can't go back, so there's hardly any point in doing so. Fifteen seconds doesn't sound like much time but for me at least it was sufficient in every case. There's an unobtrusive little counter counting down the 15 seconds so you can see how much time you have but it's not like there's a ticking bomb or anything like that. The questions were generally a little harder than those on the actual show, or maybe it just seemed that way because I was missing some of them. Although you didn't get to select the questions in any way, they did come in categories (I remember the Jane Austen one was 19th Century Literature and the Duke of Wellington one was Great Brits; just like me to have total recall about the ones I missed.:)) The entire test took about 10 minutes.

The requirements don't say anything about you needing high-speed internet, but I don't see how it could be done on dialup. They do say it requires IE so I bit the bullet and used it just this once. The site seemed to run fine on Firefox, however.

20. I'm taking it tonight.
I'm in the central time zone. I figured I'd have to take it tonight and it wouldn't give me an indefinite time to finish it, as it says to be there by a certain time. I was just hoping it wouldn't be a short term timed thing, if that makes sense. I'll be putting the kids to bed around that time, so I may not be able to finish it.

21. The email I got earlier this month gave a registration deadline,
or to quote exactly, said, "Registration will remain open until 7:30 PM Pacific Time tonight" where "tonight" was January 8th. I guess it doesn't really preclude the possibility that registration would remain open after that time as well; the next sentence says you have to be registered in advance to take the test, not that you have to be registered by the 8th. So although it seems to be a kind of cockeyed way of running things, I hope I'm wrong and you get to take the test. If so, best of luck!

So it looks like I'll be okay. I'm sorry I missed your thread earlier, though I don't know how much you can prepare for something like this. It's not like you can cram :) It does seem like they're running it weird, with the conflicting info and all.

23. I took one in person here in Dallas a few years ago.

I wasn't in the top 5 either.

The things that stood out for me:

1. The "March" family that they talked about sounded vaguely familiar, but I never read any Louisa May Alcott in school. The question edned up referring to "Little Men."

2. Harry Potter had just started getting popular. I had read the first book, but not paid that much attention. The train from the 9 3/4 platform headed to FREAKING HOGWARTS! I will never forget that school name again as long as I live.

3. The Eastern European version of NATO was NOT SALT, which kept running through my head, but the Warsaw Pact!

Those were the biggies that kept me from going on to fame and fortune.
