The U.S. and Canada are tied at 1-1 late after the first period of their World Junior Hockey Final in Helsinki. Dan Fritsche of the Columbus Blue Jackets scored at 8:57 to tie the contest. Earlier, Nigel Dawes put Canada out to an early lead at 3:25. An end-to-end frantic pace led to good scoring chances that kept both netminders hopping at either end of the ice. Canada scored on its first shot on net against U.S. netminder Al Montoya, a star throughout the early stages of the tournament. He and Canadian goalie Marc-Andre Fleury both looked sharp in handling the brisk pace and good scoring chances.

Man.. the Toronto Star is loading slow today. Somebody plug in the block heater!

17. second intermission - more updates..
* Good pressure by Team Canada in the final seconds of the second period, but US goalie Montoya comes up with some big saves.

* Forward Nigel Dawes is denied a hat trick on a partial breakaway by USA goalie Al Montoya. Two minutes remaining in the second period, Canada leads 3-1.

Sounds like Montoya is getting hammered. Where's the defense?!

26. team usa up on an own goal..
* Third period: USA leads Canada 4-3. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury's attempt to clear the puck hit a Canadian defender and deflects into the net. Team USA centre Patrick O'Sullivan is given credit for the goal. It's O'Sullivan's second goal of the game. * Third period: 3-3 tie. Great chance for Brady Murray of Team USA, Canada's Tim Brent gains possession and heads the other way with teammate Dan Paille.

You take what ya can get!!

34. i've paid my dues - time after time..
I’ve done my sentence
But committed no crime -
And bad mistakes
I’ve made a few
I’ve had my share of sand kicked in my face -
But I’ve come through

We are the champions - my friends
And we’ll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
’cause we are the champions - of the world -

Great match! Props to Team Canada for an outstanding effort. That last goal was cheap, but those things do happen. See ya in NoDak next year!!
