Anybody know anything about German immigration? |
|
I was born in Germany to an American military family and spent the first 4 years of my life there. Does that qualify me to be a German citizen?

1. Looks like one of the parents had to be a German citizen first. |
|
http://www.germany.info/relaunch/info/archives/background/citizenship.htmlThis is what the rightwing is trying to pass here to eliminate citizenship by birth if the parents are undocumented.

3. Can't hurt to look into it further. |
|
At least document your birth there with records in case the law changes later. If you're ever able to get it, you'll have an EU passport and can travel freely over most of Europe.
If one of your grandparents was born in Ireland, you can get Irish - and EU - citizenship that way.
I'm sticking it out here myself.

Even if I did qualify for citizenship it looks like I'd have to learn the German language and give up my U.S. citizenship to become a citizen there under other existing laws. It would just be cool to know that I could be a citzen of another country in case things became a drag here.

Not a drag, things here are just starting to get interesting. The next few years should be a hoot - ya don't want to miss it.
Anyway, there's always Canada.
But you'd have to learn the languages, eh?

10. Ok, maybe I mis-read your post ... |
|
When you talked about things becoming a drag "here", I assumed you meant the U.S.
Where are you living now, Droopy?
If I were in Iran or Congo, I think I'd prefer a move to Germany. I lived outside of Stuttgart many years ago. Very nice area.

|
either a German citizen or an American citizen. I could be completely wrong.

12. You were born to American military parents, not German ones, |
|
therefore you cannot claim German citizenship.
