So I was lucky enough to have an assistantship fall into my lap... |
|
Some extra funding in our department appeared and I was offered an assistantship (non-teaching) thanks to a professor friend of mine who dropped my name.
Anywho...I know it's just a girl Friday position, grading papers, proctoring exams etc, but hell, it beats slinging drinks and cleaning bathrooms in a bar, right?
Point of this post...I walked into my "mentor's" (not the prof who suggested I get the position) office to tell her that I'd taken the offer, I said, "I'm pretty excited, this might be interesting--maybe a good opportunity..." blah, blah...and she looked me dead in the eye and said, "No. It won't be interesting at all. It won't be much fun either. But it's money, right?"
Thank you, Professor Debbie Downer. :eyes:

1. Well, even if Prof. Downer is right, |
|
it'll probably beat slinging drinks and cleaning bathrooms. Congrats!

2. She's a cheerful sort... |

She's wrong, too - even a non-teaching assistantship can be fun and educational, if the faculty supervisor makes a slight effort to make it so...
Congratulations!

7. Thanks, she kinda hurt my feelings with that. |
|
I may end up with a different mentor.
Her "encouragement" has been duly noted.

3. Some people can't see beyond the nose on their face |

Just because she may not find it interesting doesn't mean no one else would. I almost feel sorry for people who view the world like that.
Have fun. Enjoy! :toast:

4. The job itself may not be interesting, but the environment certainly could bring opportunity |
|
No matter what the job is, working in an academic setting would probably prove more interesting than working in a bar. That is unless your bar patrons have some really really good stories.
