1. What are the parameters for "big" house?
We've got 3600 sq ft (2700 finished + unfinished third floor). Is it big enough to qualify as a McMansion?

'Course, we are destroying the planet with two half-hour commutes (soon to be just one though). And I think the house insulation is for shit (built in the 1870s and not updated well), so we're likely wasting heat. Oh--and we use the woodstove a lot, so count us in for killing trees and blowing soot into the air. Howzat? :hi:

22. I have a big house, but don't blame me
It was built decades before I was born.

Utilities are no higher than a smaller house, 'cause we don't heat or cool the upstairs very often, and we're careful with the thermostat. I know people in small apartments who pay more than we do.

If that's destroying the earth, then I'm guilty.

31. I have a big house
I'm not going to say how big. Bigger than any mentioned so far.

However, I do try not to ruin the planet. I recycle everything. I am looking into installing solar panels. I haven't turned the AC or heat on in about 4 months (although I may need to heat the bedroom tonight because it's going down to 30 degrees). I have the right kind of light bulbs, and I never leave on lights when I'm not in a room anyway. I'm using an organic lawn company so I don't put chemicals into the ground. My husband and I have one car between us (not an SUV!). I only own rescued kitties. And I give to lots of environmental charities!

My eco-vice? I still like taking long hot showers!

It's an expensive undertaking, but, like the author says, "those numbers do nothing to account for the security and pride that come from harvesting your own power."

I have a big ass, and so does my daughter.. but son is a skinny lil feller. Do we count?

Actually, I live in a 20something year old mobile home... on 12.5 acres, have well water and my highest electric bill in almost 4 years here was $160.. last winter when it stayed below freezing (low teens) for over a week.

Oh... and I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. V-8, heavy duty towing package (for pulling my big-ass gas sucking 24' pontoon boat), all leather, all power, heaters built into the seats, sunroof... the works and a Ford F-150 extended cab truck. They're both mine... the kids ain't old enough to drive yet.

but it's for sale :) It's not a McMansion - it was built in 1883 - and it's a solid, stately beast. But we can't afford to maintain it or heat it comfortably any more (and as I'm getting divorced, neither myself nor my husband could keep it on our own).
I bought the place before finding DU and believe it or not, have felt guilty about living so luxuriously.

43. By my estimation I live in a big-ass house
but that's just personal feelings. It's a roughly 1400sq/ft townhouse with a garage and finished basement room. It has an open living/dining area, a generous 12x16' kitchen and a powder-room on the main floor, one large and two very small beds and two full baths on the second floor. It's bigger than the house I grew up in (though that had a garage and a full basement) and I'm only one person with three cats vs a family of five.

The townhouse is very well insulated and I keep the inside temp at a balmy 68 degrees

63. No, it's the one in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Give me a second, and I'll find a link
to the one we're trying to buy in New Hampshire.

OK, here it is: http://www.pwpre.com/open-realty/listingview.php?listingID=137

Wow, 1860? That's pretty old. Is maintenance difficult for homes that old?

71. That particular one has been updated. 200-amp electrical service (which I need
for my office), new plumbing, new roof, all that stuff.

Just perfect for us. Old-world charm, New-world mechanicals.

66. Damn! That is a fine house. I love the windows.
I am up in the middle of a forest. 7 acres in North Central Minnesota will definitely buy you some solitude.

61. 1200 sq. ft
1200 sq. ft. house. Two women, three cats, two dogs, two rats and a mouse.
We drive a 19 year old Volvo.
My girlfriend has a regular ass but she says mine is basically non-existent.

69. Aha. Just realized you were being facetious, and I apologize for being so slow
to pick up on it.

70. 1119 s.f. exactly (says the appraiser). We're thinking of burning the
back 119 ft to make it more even and progressive. My office is in the basement. Wherever you call home is home. No "big" deal.

73. I live in a three story 12 room Victorian all by myself
My family bought it over 50 years ago and I kind of inherited it. It's home to me...I feel like Scarlet O'Hara at Terra

80. Dude, y'all suck
I think I'd kill for 2500sqft much less 3000 or more lol.

I have 1300 square feet for five ppl. Oh alright, we converted the garage so like 1700 sqft. But I'm buying an SUV to make up for my lack of McMansion. :P Do I need a sarcasm tag here?? Maybe not cuz I really am buying an SUV. I'll only use it when I gotta haul 5 ppl around. I swear.

As for y'all trying to burn out a florescent (how the hell do you spell that?) lightbulb...good luck with that! I have one I haven't turned off in like 4 years and the sucker's still going.
