Custom level grayed out - Techies please help |
|
I asked this question before but apparently not very clearly. I have a computer from where I used to work. They let me keep it when I left. I upgraded from Windows 95 to Windows 98SE. I upgraded from explorer 5 to explorer 6. Apparently there are setting somewheres that have the computer think it is still connected to a network, which it isn't. The problem is that I cant activate ACTIVEX controls because, in internet options, under security, the custom level is grayed out. (Presumably this was the previous network setting).
Is there a way to ungray it? Talking to administrators from previous job is not an option. Thanks for any help.

You probably installed a customized version of IE6 that locks out certain options. There are certain policies sections in the registry that need to be reset or deleted. I kept the values on a disk at work, I don't recall which ones to delete off the top of my head.
It's utterly feeble and dilettante, using this primitive form of lockdown, but many IT departments think it's enough to keep prying eyes away. :eyes: (uh, the computer illiterate aren't going to tinker or would ask beforehand. The computer literate either don't care, or would try to do something actually damaging if they got fired. They would also likely know that their internet connectios are monitored, so if they want to disable a setting just to see a no-no site, it makes no difference in the end...)
