For a long time I'd go into my bank to get a money order for the rent. They would always bug me to sign up for online bill paying so I finally agreed. Come January 2 I submit payment for rent which goes to the post office address of landlord. A few weeks later he calls and asks me where is the rent check. I call the bank, they're clueless and stop payment. Money comes back in, I resend. Two days ago landlord still hasn't received check. I tell the bank girl on the phone: How is it that you charge me if I bounce a check but you screw up this bill pay after begging me for months to do it and you won't pay me? You think the landlord believes me..."the check is in the mail."? He's got bills to pay too. Here it is the end of the month and tomorrow the rent is due. I'm going to march into WELLS FARGO and ask for a money order and when the teller says to me..."Really mamn, it would be so much easier to do bill pay. Why don't I sign you up."
Give me the manager kid! How much money did you make off of me screwing up my rent check?

You have no idea how many of these corporate behemoths have tried to charge me "late fees" since I switched to electronic bill paying. There's no logical reason why they should be getting the payments later than they would if I had mailed them a check. How can it possibly take more than two business days for an EFT to clear both banks involved???

2. Can you join a credit union? |
|
I do bill pay through mine and there's only ever been one mix-up, which they took care of and paid any fees for. Recently, I was worried that my cell phone payment hadn't posted, so I called the CU and they made the cell phone company find the payment (it HAD been paid). Then the CU and the cell phone company called to tell me that the payment had posted.
That said, I would never again do business with Wells Fargo after they bought my mortgage and harrassed me all the time about refinancing, extra insurance -- you name it. I'm not surprised that they screwed up.

3. We don't have Wells Fargo here, but avoid 5th/3rd like the plague |
|
they ripped a whole lot of people off in Michigan when they bought out Old Kent Bank (which was a great bank). They stole about a quarter million from my grandpa.

12. 5th/3rd... where the hell did they get that name? |
|
That's a bank and two-thirds. That's two-thirds more bank than I really need.

I'm sorry you went through all that crap with WF.
I bank with them, too. No way are they getting me to sign up for bill pay!

5. I hate banks and Wells Fargo is way up on the list of those I hate most |
|
Used to bank with them. They slammed me with fees for everything. The final straw came when they charged me for an overdraft that was their fault. I called the bank to ask about the overdraft and the following month my statement showed a fee for 2 dollars.
I had no idea what that was for and so I called. The woman I talked to explained that they charge 2 dollars to ask a question over the phone if the question is one that can be answered by their automated system. I asked how the automated system was supposed to answer my previous question about the overdraft and she admitted she didn't know.
So I asked, "Am I going to be charged 2 dollars for THIS call?"
Probably, she said.
I marched right down there and closed my account and you know, no one ever asked why. You'd think they'd want to do something to keep a customer but no - they just spent about 3/4 of an hour trying to do the math required to close my account (which I was able to do in my head :eyes: ) and that was that.
I hate banks.

6. Oh hell, I talked with them twice and if they charge me I'll have a few words to say. |
|
Yes, and they did try to charge me for other matters in the past which I went to see the manager about and had it taken off. I can't wait to lay into them when I get my money order. I'll make sure to speak loudly so others can hear.

Wells Fargo did it again. No rent check arrived (2nd time). I was two hours on the phone with these clowns. First they wanted to charge me $34 for an overdraft that was their fault because they failed to post it electronically on my statement. Got rid of it. Then I had to call bill pay because when I called my landlord today he said he did not receive it although it was to have been in his hands yesterday. The customer service rep said to me "I'm not calling you a liar, but are you sure the address hasn't changed?" Me: " Look lady, said town is very small and the post office is as small as you can get and it's not their fault." I asked to speak to a supervisor and told her and she called my landlord and lo and behold by gumption the address IS THE SAME! Wow, I was not lying. Just Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I told her Wells Fargo is screwing up big time with my account and now I owe two months rent, only one of which I can pay until the rest of the money is routed back. Futhermore, I told her the bank should pay me for the screw up since Wells Fargo has no problem charging us when we make a mistake. Therefore they will pay me the princely sum of $50.00! Should be $100 since it happened twice but banks are robbers. My IRS check will come in two weeks and I will open another account in another bank and withdraw every single penny from that crook bank.
Whew, now I feel better.

I've had to watch them like a hawk and told the woman too. This is not the first time they pulled the "overdraft" stunt and I've always had them take it off. You've just got to hang in there and give them hell.

9. Make sure that you didn't set up a recurring payment |
|
That is, make sure that one wasn't set up with or without your approval. Otherwise, when you withdraw next month's rent, the bank will try to debit your account for the same amount, and they they'll slap you with an overdraft fee.

14. I will NEVER go to online payments |
|
I tried it once (my bank is LaSalle Bank) and they thoughtfully double paid the bill every month and the company took it. It took forever to straighten it out and I will never do that again. I write and send my checks.
But, I swear, companies hold up your check on purpose to try and make you believe it wasn't delivered so you WILL sign up for online pay. It's happened with me with Comcast and AT&T; the other checks I sent on those days cleared instantly while these were delayed by a week or more. Both times when I called to try and straighten it out I had to spend 25 minutes listening to the online payment pitch.

15. I do online bill pay for EVERYTHING but.... |
|
..my rent check. It's probably the only time I actually use my checkbook.
I do know when you first set-up a new Billpay it normally takes about a week for the check to get through
