Confess (or brag) did you bring anyone else to DU? |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 12:27 AM by salin
While I didn't know it for a long time - I brought a couple of folks here.
One time I went to a protest (bush fundraiser) in South Bend, Indiana. We carpooled with some other peace folks (this was back in 2002). While at the March (very well attended), I borrowed a cell-phone from one who drove up with us to call Mike Malloy and mentioned DU on the air - while describing a very well attended event in a red state. At the end of the march we met up briefly with another DUer - but didn't have time to stop and eat.
A year or more later, the local peace group brought Will Pitt out to speak (and two DUers who are now married - met at the DU get together that grew out of the Pitt visit), and I was sort of in charge of arranging different events but found myself in a bit of a personal emergency and couldn't do some of the DU 'gathering' stuff and a DUer contacted me to help... and it turned out she had been in the car (and I used her cell phone, I think) to call Malloy, learned of DU and had joined. But she never knew my screen name and visa versa.
Also tied to the Pitt visit, a friend/colleague in the local peace group worked with me to do the logistics and support (and raise the $$) for the Pitt visit. This person worked to get media to meet with Pitt while he was in town, and learned of DU b/c she had to work timing around the DU meals/gatherings.
This election (years later) I had problems voting - and contacted her because I knew she was in contact with national groups tracking voting machine problems. During our conversation DU came up - and it was divulged that this person had been an active member since the 2004 elections - while first finding our 'have a gathering via an internet board' seemed sorta absurd ... after the 04 elections and concerns per voting machines and other disturbing descrepancies - this person decided to find some places also concerned with these issues ... and came to DU. Again we has *no* idea of each others' DU names - and had been periodically conversing (cyber) for quite some time.
I know many have made direct introductions - but am guessing there area also many less-directed introductions.
Tell us your story if you introduced others to DU - or if you were introduced to DU through other DUers. (The whole DU ripple effect).

8. I cherish her - even if she "speaks" rarely |
|
the more conversation the better.
Per wishy-washy - aren't we all a little wishy-washy per DU from time to time?
I mean I LOVE Du - but at times it drives me to distraction. Had I not first already fallen in love (so to speak) with the place - my reactions when frustrated with DU would probably be a more overall wishy washy feel.
Indeed when I get frustrated - I tend to retreat to the LBN and Op/Ed forums for awhile - great information and less flamey discussions.

14. Yeah, I can see your point...:) |
|
I fell for DU in a heartbeat...finally a place where I(we) as in Libs/Dems could debate more than just "Bush sucks, Bush doesn't suck" debates, which filled my online time up greatly when I was on other chat rooms...nothing of substance, and every RW wanted to debate how good GWB was....it got old, fast.
I was pointed to this site in early Feb of 04, but never came here...at times, I couldnt' even remember the name of this site...one of my wife's coworkers, is the one that rec' the site to me...and after the 7th of Nov, I felt like I should give DU a shot...and I've been here ever since...:)
My wife (who is turtlelowe) is quite busy, and her posting time is very limited, and the issues she would like to debate would be...a waste of time, in her opinion....she doesn't like banging her head against brick walls, so she just posts here/their about American Indian issues/Race/Poverty....

3. I keep trying to get my ultra-liberal cousin to post here. |
|
Really, her anti-Bush tirades make me seem like a Bush sympathizer by comparison. And she's been at it since the early 60's.

5. keep at it (or at least keep planting the idea) |
|
sooner or later she just might check-in just to 'see' - hopefully she would consider joining the conversation.
Or as I found - maybe she is already here and you just don't know it yet.... If she doesn't know your DU name - you may have already had a raucous conversation with her!?!? (Just say that b/c I had no idea I had been having conversations with folks I knew - who learned of DU through me (but didn't know my name on DU) until later converations.) Wouldn't that be a hoot?

10. I don't find that surprising |
|
from the time I first "met" you here at DU - you get conversations going - and get folks thinking. Not surprising that in real-life those conversations would lead to some folks wanting to 'read more' to the forum that you refer.

Come to think of it, I've never sufficiently punished her for it. :7
I've enticed two to join so far. A third may come soon, since she also knows ronnykmarshall.

She doesn't post here much, as she is working and going to school, but she likes the links from DU that I send her.

15. Cool that you two have the relationship |
|
to share newsy info (like DU links). After college and a move to DC (where both my parents had once lived) we began to develop that kind of relationship - and it is one I cherish, and regret that my siblings don't have with my Mom and missed with my Dad (he passed a number of years ago). My mother and I share books and magazine articles. She is just now geting comfortable with the web - so I am just getting to the point of sending her articles that I find at DU.
Only say this becuase few of my adult friends have this kind of relationship with their parents - my Dad used to send me NYT articles/clippings with NO letter. Seriously, an envelope full of clippings with some arrows pointing me to which article (side of the clipping) he wanted me to read. I found it funny (the no letter or message part) but really cool. I cherish this part of our relationship - even when we disagreed about our take on issues - we had fabulous (and informed) conversations - that added to our relationship as I aged. Gave some of the foundation to adult to adult conversations (instead of parent/child) that we had over the years. Your post made me think of the beginning of that very special part of the relationship that I have had with my parents. Good for you both!
