Anyone here named after family members .
I was named after two aunts who died a few months after birth.

Why, to keep the old family names going.

I think it was creepy myself.

1. I am supposedly named after a cousin of my father.
Whatever. I don't particularly like my name anyway. I should have changed it when I got married. I would still have been called the same thing, but my actual name would be different. I did change my middle name when I got married though.

3. I was named under the male tradition...

...of giving the son the middle name of the father's first name. So the middle name's a family name, but the first one is unique. I think that's fairly common. Though other branches of my family have approximately three names between 7 generations.

My daughter's middle name is that of a deceased maternal great-grandmother, but I think it was on accident; it was mostly just pretty :).

Unfortunately she passed away quite suddenly in 2003 of a heart problem. She was the most amazingly sophisticated woman I've ever known.

and my youngest son has my grandfather's name, Henry. He's passed but never had any sons of his own and was so very happy to have a grandson with his name.

When it came time to name my daughter, my STBE said to me and his mother, why don't we name her after my mom? MIL spoke up and said, "Are you crazy? I wouldn't wish the name Agnes on any child." This is the smartest thing she's ever said.

To clear up my confusion - did your aunts die very young (ie as babies or children), or after giving birth?

Both of my grandmothers lost children - my paternal grandmother lost 1 and 7 lived, and my maternal lost 2 and 9 lived. The latter was already done with babies by the mid 1920's, and the former by the mid 30's.

I can't imagine the heartbreak your grandmother went through. :-(

55. Oh I hear you. . .
my first name is after my father and I have always gone by my middle name. What a pain in the ass with work, insurance, credit, doctors, etc. Whenever someone asks me my first name I look like an idiot because I have to pause to try to remember if this particular video membership, credit card, appointment, etc. was under my legal first name or the middle name that I identify with. I have sat in waiting rooms many times while my first name is called and I just don't register that they are talking to me. Not until they call the first and last name does it catch my attention from the People magazine I'm engrossed in.

My daughter has the names of both of my husband's grandmothers: Anna-Maria. Both of them were named Anna Maria. We named her that because he liked Anna and I liked Maria, not because of his grandmothers, so we compromised on Anna-Maria.

Our son is named William Richard. William after my dad and Richard after my uncle.

34. I was named after my grandmother, who was very much alive at the time I was born.
:) Mom and Dad named me after Mom's side of the family and named my sister after Dad's. My brother's name was chosen just because Mom liked it. :)

My name is Julie and my grandmother's name was Julia. Mom felt that Julie was a more modern version of Granny's name, and it helped her tell us apart. My middle name prior to getting married was my mother's maiden name. :) Mom also hates nicknames, so my name isn't short for anything. My sister and my brother both have simple names that are hard to make nicknames out of too.

36. After my father
The family had a thing for naming kids after fathers. So there were lots of two with the same names; like Big _____ and Little _____. And my father was such an egotist he asked that I name my kid after me (him). I said no way, the kid gets their own name. That's if one comes around. But considering both my parents were awful, it might be a good thing not to breed, in case it's genetic.

37. I wasn't
My half brother was named after his mother's deceased father and given the same middle name as my father, grandfather, and great grandfather. My mother gave her youngest daughter (my half sister) the same first name as her mother and gave her the middle name of her husband's mother.
My husband and I plan to name our children after our grandparents and possibly great grandparents, the one's that had nice names anyway. I don't think the practice is creepy. It is about connecting with one's heritage and ancestors.

I have a niece whose first name is my mom's first name, Frances. I don't know why my brother did it because my mom has always loathed her first name. My mom prefers her middle name.

My middle name is the Gaelic word for my last name. So, in effect, I am kerrytravelers name name. But, since most people don't speak Gaelic, very few notice it. However, in college, I was friends with a Korean guy who actually recognized the Gaelic word! That blew my mind. I wouldn't recognize a Korean word!

53. I am named after my dad and my mom was named after her dad.
I wanted to follow that tradition with my daughter, but there was just no way to use her father's name so we named her after my grandma & aunt and her paternal grandmother. Then my son's middle name (William) was after my mom (Billie Jean), her dad (William), and my other grandpa (William) and grandma (Wilma). It just seemed obvious to me that he had to be named William. Plus, it made for many happy relatives.

I think it's a Southern thing. There are very few people in my family that aren't named for another family member.
