I just got a new job about a month ago and I really like it. It pays good, I like the work, and I like the people. Unfortunately, it's a 35 mile drive one way to get to work. I have a Chevy S-10 pickup that doesn't really get bad gas mileage, but I could probably cut my fuel bill by at least a third or possibly in half if I drove a sub-compact car. But I really like my little S-10.
I also love the little town that I currently live in. I grew up here and I feel comfortable here like no other place in the country.
So here are my options if I want to save a lot of money. Trade the truck for a used sub-compact car and continue to live in my home town. There is also the time factor involved with this one as it takes about a hour out of my day to drive back and forth to work. Or, move up to the city where the job is located. It's a small town as well and I probably wouldn't feel too out of place there, but there's no place like home.
What would you do if anything?

1. Could you rent an apt in the town the job is in |
|
and live there for a while to see if you like it?
Other than that I would stay where I feel comfortable, just maybe change the car.

But here in America most landlords want you to sign a 1 year lease. But if I were to move up that way permanently I would go for an apartment anyway instead of buying a house because I want to remain debt free. So your suggestion is an option that I hadn't thought about that will give me something else to consider. The bad part would be being locked into that lease for a year if things turned sour.

4. That's the way I'm leaning |

And maybe after a couple of years of living there I would develop the same feelings for that little town as I do for the one I grew up in.

Every new town is an adventure; that's the way I look at it. And if you're comfortable w/ the area, all the better..
