What would you do if your own father sent you repug spam? |
|
This one was entitled "More atrocities in Iraq." My father simply wrote, "I saved this for you until you got home...thought you might enjoy it." Attached were several pics of US troops holding and comforting Iraqi children.
WTF? This, from my father? Without going into a lot of history, my father was away during Vietnam...when he returned things were never the same in my family. Doesn't he think for one moment that those soldiers who are holding and giving affection to Iraq children are missing their own kids back home? Or, wonder why the Iraq children need affection? *sigh*
Do I even get into this, or just leave it alone. My father is old now...every time I wonder if I should challenge his continual Repug ways, I remind myself he may not live much longer.
What would you do?
I'll probably just not respond to the email...and if he asks me about it simply mention how sad it is the soldiers aren't at home with their own loved-ones.

1. I usually don't respond to friends and family on that stuff. |
|
Unless it is really outrageous or provably (snopes) untrue. I got two from neighborhood friends yesterday and just dumped 'em.

Believe it or not (and you would believe it if you knew me well), it's more difficult for me to be silent on this subject.

15. I think your first instinct, to comment on how it's too bad the soldiers |
|
aren't home with their own families (and too bad we're blowing up kids and their parents such that they need to be comforted) would be sufficient. I've made enough such comments that my father has wholly given up on trying to convert me and in fact, I believe I've had an impact on his thinking. With dear friends and relatives, kind is always best.

But the fact that he made it will make my excursions to that particular place more interesting. I had noticed him watching me for about an hour. When my (male) friend went to the restroom, he came right over and made his proposal. I'm sort of glad to be doing the single thing right now because at least I have an idea what my kids are going to be dealing with very soon. Things have changed since I was on the manhunt, in my twenties. Wow. :hi: Hi, KC2!

I was raised in a ravingly progressive home.
However, in your shoes, I think I'd ignore it. You probably won't persuade him, so I wouldn't bother. I might with a friend, acquaintance, co-worker, even a sibling. But with a parent, I'd let it go.

it's pretty sad. He know it from front to back because he hears it on his religious programs that he watches.
Probaby your answer at the end would be the best way to handle it. Or to say that the atrocities there came about because of U.S. actions. I always wonder about those times when a child has been badly injured by the war and stuff. and there are American reporters in the hospital rooms with the family...being all sympathetic, yet don't the family members just want to kill the reporter, who is American? I would. I don't know why they don't.

If this isn't a regular thing, I'd just ignore it.
If it is a regular thing, or if it becomes one, I'd do what I did with my dad. I sent him an email asking him to please not send me that stuff - that he and I do not agree politically and that it's unlikely either of us will change the others' mind.
I've also told him more than once that I'm always happy to debate issues with him but only if he wants to put forth his own viewpoint, not recycle canned emails from someone else.
I did it in a neutral and non-confrontational way and I've gotten nothing of the sort since. We have a cordial relationship that leaves politics pretty much at the door.

Ignore and try to get along. I tell my parents, father especially, "I'm not calling to talk about that" and change the subject. He's still itchin' for it after all these years though. Some people (30% apparently) just refuse to see the light.

28. The Nazi's used a propaganda poster in occupied countries during |
|
WWII. It showed a handsome, kindly German soldier playing with happy young French (or Dutch, or Belgian, or Norwegian depending on the country occupied) children, with a slogan saying how GOOD German soldiers were to the "liberated" populace. In France, one understandably outraged member of the Resistance scrawled his own message on a copy of the poster. His reference to the German soldier in the poster read: "He replaces the father he killed!"
Just my 0.2 cents.

30. I seem to be firmly embedded in my mom's 'repug and church-people' forward list... |
|
and that's usually the only e-mail that i get from her.
I finally got annoyed one day (after she had sent me over 10 separate fundie-koolaid-publican e-mails), and asked her if she ever actually WRITES anything, or just clicks 'forward'on whatever her church friends send her?!
It hasn't stopped, but i feel better... and i just delete all the rubbish without opening it.

And by that I mean left, just not as left. But, I would say you never got the e-mail or it somehow ended up in your spam folder. That is if he ever asks why you didn't reply. I don't reply to most of my e-mails from family. I do if they ask a question. I don't if they are just reporting stupid shit that occurred during the day. And then I, "Bounce to Sender." I really don't need to know about grandma finally having a solid bowel movement.
