There is a girl in the class I'm T/A-ing for who spent, I swear, no less than 75% of the (2+1/2 hour) class last night staring at me. I'm not referring to when I'm up front teaching things; that would be perfectly normal. It weirds me out, because most people will abruptly stop staring when you meet their glance, but she KEEPS STARING at me. It's very bothersome.
wtf?

2. Take her aside, if it happens again. |
|
after the class.
She might not realize that she is doing it. It sounds like she needs attention of some kind, though showing it in an odd way.

9. She's probably trying to figure out why you keep watching her. |
|
Seriously, though, some people are taught it's rude to look away when someone is looking at you. Maybe that's all it is. Maybe she's trying to pick you up. Maybe she's hard of hearing and so she's used to watching people to see when they start speaking. When my oldest daughter was much younger, she couldn't hear because of ear infections. She read lips to help her understand the words she could barely hear. If she wasn't looking at someone, she couldn't hear them.
Does she smile when you meet her gaze? Remember, you're the authority figure. She's probably just trying hard not to displease you by looking away or not looking interested.

11. She doesn't adjust her epression at all, |
|
she just keeps staring at me. Maybe she's on something. She's supposed to be watching the professor, who's speaking, not me. It doesn't usually bother me if I notice someone glancing at me frequently; I know people get bored and are curious about one another, but usually they'll stop staring once they see you notice it.

14. Maybe she is like me - hard of hearing and with bad eyesight. |
|
I tend to stare at people to get as much of their visual in my mind as possible because my eyesight is bad. And like someone else said, maybe she is hard of hearing. Does she talk ? Does she do anything else at besides stare at you ? Don't be too hard on her - she might just be tired as hell and is one of those people who can sleep while their eyes are wide open.
Or maybe she is checking you out LOL :hide:

staring because it's a learned condition and not empathizing with the ambient human condition...

21. Maybe she's not even aware she's staring at you. |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 11:08 AM by Kerrytravelers
She may be deep in thought. She may be extremely tired and fazing out. My mother-in-law will have small seizures where she just sits nd stares. You don't even know she's having one. When it's over, she kind of looks around like "huh" and then goes right on. She has small ones al the time and usually, we don't even know she had one. Saying something to her could be extremely upsetting to her, especially if she is hard of hearing and is looking to read lips. If it really bothers you, is there a way of moving yourself a bit out if her eye-range?
Anyway, I'm not there, so I don't know, but maybe it is something to consider.
Edited to add: I had many ear infections as a kid and it damaged my hearing. I also have a bit of an intense look, so I have had people think I'm staring when really, I'm just trying to hear. It can be embarrassing when someone says something to you and even a bit upsetting. If someone looks at me funny, I just explain I'm trying to hear them better. It really could be just that. And she can't help it if she just as an intense look in her eyes. It does make us look like we're staring, and we're not.
