2. She gave me the tickets. |

I had no idea she was into Goth...she seems so conservative. It's a kick. We suddenly have something in common. Can't imagine what I'll do at the opera, tho.

thats one of the most beautiful operas, and the music and plot are very "accessable", meaning people who arent "opera geeks" understand it and like it.
and many operas are now done with supertitles, they will project the english words on a curtain over the stage, making it much easier to follow.

7. Very cool. It's the Sarasota Opera, so it will be awesome. |
|
And I know one of the violinists who was hired for the season, so it makes it more personal.

14. "Un bel di, vedremo" Puccini is the best at melody. We're seeing our umpteenth |
|
"La Boheme" at the Shubert here in New Haven next weekend. Can't wait for the end of that first act.
I have always thought that there are opera people and there are concert people and sometimes they aren't one and the same. The opera people can be very emotive (all the "bravo/bravas!")which you don't often see in the sedate appreciation of the concert audiences.
BTW, I was amused (again) to hear a Doritos commercial at the opening of the Super Bowl that used "Beviamo" from "La Traviata" which kind of makes sense in that context.

21. I've been a classical music nut all my life |
|
And when I was in high school we went to the opera for a couple of years. I didn't get it. It was pretty, but I didn't understand what was going on.
Then, in 1990, for no particular reason except to expand a young person's mind, I took my baby sitter's teenaged son to see "Samson and Delilah".
They had Surtitles (TM) in English, and I GOT IT!!!
Surtitles totally changed my understanding of opera, and now I really dig it. I even took voice lessons for a couple of years, and learned to sing in foreign languages. I found out what my range is. I'm more or less a mezzo and lyric soprano.
I get unhappy at people who say they don't like opera, and I ask them if they've ever seen one and they say "No". I explain about special effects, and lighting, and surtitles and how spectacular they are now, and they just don't get it.
They think opera is Porky Pig in a Brunnhilde costume with horns, apparently.
My fave opera is "Don Giovanni". My favorite aria to sing is "Non so piu" from The Marriage of Figaro.
I would recommend Mozart or Puccini to anybody, although Puccini didn't write anything for mezzos. Grrr!!! ;-)
And yes, Nessun dorma is the Pavarotti National Anthem.

12. That opera is by Puccini, which I always recommend to people who are afraid of opera. |
|
Puccini's arias are flat out gorgeous. You will be entranced by them in Butterfly but you should also try "La Boheme" and "Tosca" (altho the story is a bit gruesome). Of course, it was a big hit when the Three Tenors used to sing "Nessun dorma" from "Turandot" with its big finish with the tenors belting out "Vincero, vincero, vincero!" Translation: "I will win, I will win, I will win!" I've heard it on commercials even.

but I love Madame Butterfly. It's the best first opera to see.

And I say that as more of a goth/alt rock type. There are a few operas I like and that's one of them.
I hope you enjoy it. :)

19. OK, so it was a Polish opera, Halka. Very dramatic. |
|
I was the youngest one in the audience. I was expecting a death at any moment with all the 90 year olds. Fabulous!

23. My mom went to an opera in Pilz, and she said the audience was mostly kids... |
|
And when the opera was finished, and she was leaving, she could hear them singing bits of the opera. The cost of the ticket was something like $2.50, and it was a good seat. But I guess that's what happens when the government subsidizes the arts, and promotes fine arts education from kindergarten on up...
Glad you enjoyed!
